Books of Photography

Ok, would anyone recommend some great books of photography? Note, I didn't say "books on photography". That is, I am not looking for reference or instruction books. I want books with great photographic images that are inspiring and amazing. Could be by one or more photographers. In any style of photography you wish.

It is a really braod question that you ask... If you're looking for the best contemporary stuff, there is an annually produced collection called Graphis Photographica that is always spectactular.

Otherwise, just look around at the art/photo section of your nearest large bookstore; it won't take long before you figue out what you like.

I have a book titled Chased By The Light by Jim Brandenburg. He takes one picture a day (no 2nd exposures or 2nd chances) in the forest around his Minnesota home between autumn and winter. Awesome book.

Thomas Mangelsen is a superb nature and wildlife photographer who has published a number of books. Do a search for the Images of Nature gallery.

If you have an interest in railroading, especially the steam era, look for the photography of O. Winston Link.

Another good source of photography books is the National Geographic Society. They have published many books on all areas of photography.

One book I found particularly poignant, perhaps because I served there, was REQUIEM, By the Photographers Who Died in Vietnam and Indochina, edited by Horst Faas and Tim Page. The book is full of very powerful photography from the conflict in Southeast Asia and features biographies of the photographers killed during the war. There is also a video from the History Channel entitled "Suicide Missions: Combat Photographers" that parallels the book.

There is a new book out titled "How To Read A Photograph: Lessons From The Master Photographers" (Ian Jeffrey) that is chock full of the worlds most famous photographs, a blurb about what makes the photo unique, and a short bio of the photographer. Softcover, but very high quality images. $35.

Another book to check out is by Joe McNally, and it's called, "The Moment It Clicks" --it's really great and makes a great book for anybody to read/look at whether you are a photographer or not.

I got this from the library and absolutely love it. Maybe it's because he writes about and shows things I'm interested in but it's fantastic. A lot of good advice from experience and from his mentors. Every other page has a great photo and How It Was Shot (or something like that) in addition to general writing about the situation or type of photography.
