I just read that the U.S. pricing on the Tamron 11-18mm Di II (EF-S equivalent) lens will be just under $1000.

And here I am waiting for a cheaper alternative to the Canon 10-22mm.

Maybe the Sigma 10-20mm will be cheaper.

Hm. Does Di II mean it'll only fit on the EF-S cameras?

Tamron has a list price of $980 on their site
http://www.tamron.com/lenses/prod/11_18mm.asp

The Canon 10-22 is a whole stop quicker as well

I agree with CDS ... that's gotta be list price. It's an APS-sensor only lens and unless they're nuts they'll have to price it competitively with the Canon EF-S lens ... probably cheaper.

B&H is already listing the Tokina (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=360349&is=REG) 12-24 ... for $500.

I'm sure that's list price, but even at the 33% discount that B&H sells for the Tamron 28-75 Xr Di, the 11-18mm will still be over $650 street price, only about $30 cheaper than the Canon 10-22 at Dell with their common 15% off sale without an coupons.

I currently have a Canon 10-22mm backordered from Dell for $604, and I have until today to decide if I want to continue that order. Given that price on the Tamron, I may just wait for Dell to get me the Canon.

Kudos to Canon for brilliant engineering (at least as I understand it). The Tamron Di-II seems to be designed for smaller sensors in that it doesn't cast a full-size image (vingetting) but it also seems to be a standard physical mounting. The EF-S mount allows the rear element of the lens to sit closer to the film plane, which probably makes a huge reduction in the cost of shorter-focal-length lenses. So for once the Canon is cheaper than the comparable Tamron. Sigma also has plans for a 10-20 mm DC lens, price not yet available. I'm guessing it will also be expensive if the rear lens element has to throw the image over an inch to the film plane with a focal length of 10mm.

I predict that in a few years, sensor sizes will be even smaller (and the mirror will be smaller too), and we may see an EF-XS mount in which the mounting ring will be at the FRONT of the lens instead of near the rear, and the glass elements will sit inside the camera.

That's about the same price B&H has them listed for now ($569).

That's 42% off Tamron's posted list price of $981, which seems like a lot more of a discount than other Tamron lenses. The 28-75 is only discounted about 33%.

I just noticed their other new DI-II lens (18-200mm) is also being discounted about 45%. I wonder why they are inflating the list prices of the newer lenses?

It's kind of odd. although I would like a lens a bit cheaper than the 10-22, the price to focal length coverage just isn't worth it.
The Canon covers 10-22, these others cover 11-18. or 12-24. You end up loosing to much with the 11-18, and the 12-24 isn't that bad. If you lay on the ground you can get the extra 2mm's back.

It's kind of odd. although I would like a lens a bit cheaper than the 10-22I was thinking the same thing, but even $569 is only $120 less than I paid for my 10-22 which was not worth it to me. I was hoping the Tamron would end up being around $350-400, in which case I would have probably taken a chance with it.

Also, I don't think the Tamron takes advantage of the short back focus either, but I'm not 100% sure of that. I am just making that assumption based on the fact that they don't exclude the 10D when they say it's for digital cameras only.

I have some hopes on the Tamron 11-18mm based on its 28-75mm's excellent reputation and performance. If I do get one, I will post some pix here.

List price is $981 from www.tamron.com which means it'll actually be sold for about $700 or so. Their list prices are hugely inflated, so much that they are never sold for list price.

It is most likely that the price of Tamron 11-18mm and Canon counterpart would be more or less the same. Given it is, which brand you would buy>

I think I will go for Canon 10-22mm.

With that much money for a ultra wide variable zoom, I would get a Canon 10-22mm F/3.5-4.5 EF-s or Tokina 12-24mm F/4.

I just got my Tokina 12-24 and I am impressed. Look at the FM site under Canon Digital SLR's. I have posted pictures and other owners are very happy with the lens. A German magazine apparently tested it against the Canon and the Tokina won at the same focal lengths. The article said that the Tokina was good enough to use at F4(its constant) while the Canon required F8 to really be sharp. I think the Tokina is the best buy in the digital wide angles. I got mine for $500 at Canoga. The tokina will work on the Rebels,10D"S,D30 &60 and 20D's. Canon 11-22 won't work on all of these as I recall. Get on a waiting list for the Tokina, I love mine.
