As you may remember from earlier posts I have been having problems with my RAW format menu ie that half of the menu was not on the camera!

To this end I sent the camera back to the service centre to be fixed. Canon then contacted me for details of when the camera was purchased. As I was unable to find the receipt I sent a copy of the extended warranty. The camera was purchased in July 2004 and I felt that with the certificate of extended warranty together with a copy of the card confirming the details of purchase that was sent off to Canon for the warranty that would be sufficient their purposes especially as their card says you should enclose the bill of sale and/or warranty details when sending the camera off to be repaired. I then heard from Canon that they had sent the camera off to Colchester Cameras to be fixed. Imagine my surprise today when my wife rang to chase this when we were advised that they were unable to accept the warranty details and needed proof of purchase or a cheque for 141.00 to get it repaired.

Let this be a warning that it is not worth paying out the HIGH PREMIUM for extra warranty (if you have lost the purchase receipt)

I was under the impression, in the UK at least, that "Proof of Purchase" was the only requirement.
Proof of purchase could mean a purchase receipt, debit/credit card statement, cheque (bank statement) etc.
This would prove you purchased the item at a particular date.

If you paid by cash then a purchase receipt might be your only proof of purchase.

Go back to the place you bought it and ask for a copy of the sales reciept. If you bought it on the web just print it off yourself.

Companies can give you a duplicate or archived receipt. I just got one from Good Guys, a chain of electronics stores, an archived copy, and if it was around 3 months from the time of purchase they could have generated a register copy. My purchase was 11 months ago there and they were very cooperative.

OTOH Canon Service Center didn't care about my warranty card, they only cared about the proof of purchase, or sales receipt from B&H.

Losing your invoice is a bad idea anyhow, whatever the context. :?

It's also a good idea to save them for insurance reasons. When I got my gear insured I just printed a copy of every invoice from my B&H's web page. 27 pages later....

You scan all your receipts and put them on a CD and print one out whenever you need one.

Don't most warrenties now require the original store receipt because they do not give a warrenty on a eBay/auction related sale? Such as the reason for Authorized Dealer being such a big deal? Correct me if I am wrong. But that could be the reason they want the original receipt.

You should never throw out any fo ur reciepts no matter what the purchase is. There printed for a reason :p I still have grocery store receipts from 10 years ago that i obviously dont need but im to lazy to go through. I got an entire filing cabinet for them, organized biannually (one folder for every 6 months of a year). Never had a problem with any sort of return/warranty/repir/anything esle. Never lost a reciept in my life neither.
