There is a lot of empty space in both photos that doesn't really add anything to the picture. Also, there are a lot of artifacts in the hair of the girl and in general. This could be due to high jpeg compression or over sharpening. You might want to set the jpeg compression to level 8 or 9 (80%, 90%) to avoid this. And the t-shirt of the boy seems sharp but his face isn't, so make sure your camera focusses on the right area. In full auto mode, it will usually focus on what's nearest to the camera, in this case it was his shoulder and due to the shallow depth of field (low f-number) his face is already out of focus.
Content wise I wonder what you were trying to convey with these images. I see a boy who's looking into the distance and judging by his frowing, looking into a bright sky. Probably not the best expression ;-). And I like how the hair of the girl moves in the wind but her expression seems to be one of anticipation, as if waiting for something to appear over a hill or something :-). Ergo sum: it's not just about technique and getting it right, it's also about capturing the right moment I would say.
Hope this helps, it's all meant in a good way! :)

A simple step that can help:
For picture one - crop a little bit off the top and left side
For the B&W of the girl - I don't think I'd change a thing...I like it as is
