I read a lot that firewire readers are a lot faster but if you pick up a USB2.0 reader, are they all that much faster? An ultra III card is only 30MB/s well below the maximum throughput for USB.
Something like this is rated at 30Mb/s which will max out an Ultra III card which is one of the faster cards on the market.

I've always used USB 2.0 readers until I got the 50D. It would take forever to d/l hundreds of RAW files. All reviews pointed to Firewire as the speed king so I had to try it. And from day 1, I couldn't believe how fast it is. Absolutely is the way to go.
Technically behind the scenes, the rated throughput has to do with the hardware architecture.
