No, there isn't if you're talking about a similar type of device.

Not if you want to retain ETTL.

If not then possibilities abound.

All i'm thinking of is helping with auto focas in low light.

If you are just looking for the auto-focus assist, why not use a Speedlite that is set to not fire?

A very good question, and i fully agree, but i don't have a speedlite, i'd love one but the funds aren't there at the min for that. Just need a lower cost auto-focus assist than the ST-E2 if there is one.

Thanks

Several canon flashes are cheaper than the ST-e2.

430EX , used 420EX or 380EX, or even a 220ex.

Even a lot of the third party flash units have an AF light. I've seen some as low as $60.

I would recommend getting a real flash with bounce and swivel, though. As long as you are spending the money, might as well get the functionality. You may not think you need it, but once you have it you'll probably find it useful at least sometime.

Before Metz came up with their new line of flashes that had (and still have) flashes which you could fit to any camera brand via an SCA adapter. I have read reports from people who used these adapters alone as AF assist lights, you may want to check it out. No need to haul a large flash on your camera if all you watn is that light.

If you don't have a flash, I'd strongly recommend getting a speedlite and using it for AF assist instead of a ST-E2. As others mentioned, something like a 430ex is selling for much less than an ST-E2
