I got a Canon 30D for christmas this year and since have been snapping pictures left and right. Were just in January and I have added 3 lenses to my collections, my favorites are my 70-200 F4L USM and my 50mm f/1.8.

So without further ado, here are some shots I've taken since Christmas:

With the 70-200

and some with the 50:

And even one with the 18-55mm kit lens:

Welcome to POTN! Nice stuff -- remember to get the eyes in crisp focus for people shots.

Hello, and i too welcome you to POTN. I agree with jgrussell, you want to make sure you get the eyes in focus really well. Especially for close ups. But you have a good start going on here, cant wait to see more from you ;)

Are you talking about one shot in particular or all of them? I don't have any formal training so any advice is welcome.

Yea, I see what you mean. That 18-55 lens is a bit soft, that was taken before i got my 50mm. Hopefully I can find someone to trade me a 17-85 for my 28-135, so I never have any reason to use the kit lens again :D

The kit lens although not as good as a L lens or some of the others that you mentioned will work just fine. It appears that you are using the auto focus which is fine but it would be better to set the focus point your self because currently the auto focus setting you are using is focusing on the closest object in your case the forehead or hair and leaving the eyes slightly out of focus. The other option is to use a smaller aperture like f8.0 to help get a greater depth of field.

Do you mean select the AF point myself using focus point button and selecting the point closest to the eye, or actually turning off AF on the lens and using the focus ring?

I meant choose the AF point yourself and then put that point over the eye press the shutter half way keep till you hear the beep then keep the button depresses half way and then reframe the photo as needed. I hope that makes sense.

Perfect sense. I already do that sometimes, but now I will start doing it exclusively.
