I've been trying to build a portfolio base don family portraiture. Its a slow process for me as its very much part time. I was shooting sessions for family members but the time spent to portfolio images created ratio is crumby. Recently I started renting time at a local studio and changed my formula. I invited a bunch of family and friends for a free kids photo session last Sunday. The deal was 30 minute sessions, kids only, my choice of shots, one outfit. I gave away 3 free prints for each kid. These are the shots I'm planning on using, not necessarily the ones they picked. I love to hear constructive comments on them.

Lighting was in the studio (my high key attempt). Camera was my 30D with a Tamron 28-75 2.8. I was shooting mostly f11 as the kids move so much I like to increase my odds of focus. Shutter at 160. ISO 100.

Very cute children. The poses are adorable, but i see a couple of issues with most of the photos here. A few are a bit blown out and have hot spots. Example: #3 on his forehead, there is a pretty strong hot spot. You also, as mentioned above by another poster, have some color issues. These seem to have an orangy/reddish cast to them. Some of the lighting seems a bit harsh. What exactly was your lighting setup? what were you using to diffuse your lights? These are definately a great start, just need to work out a few kinks and you'll have it.

Thanks. I used a high key setup. Everything diffused with a softbox excpet the key light which was a beauty dish. The trouble I had was setting up lighting to be good for a large area. Some shots are well lit and others arene't depending upon where the child was when I shot. A little tricky. The older kids were all my bad. I just didn't reposition them well.
The colors are something I will work on. I just wasn't seeing it but its been sufficiently explained to me now and I finally see it. Sounds stupid I know.
