Is there a quick economical way of converting a 35mm slide to a digital image. A colleague of mine was told that he had to put away his 35mm carousel  and use Power Point.
TIA

Wouldn't you use a negative/slide scanner?

Microtek scanners have an inexpensive 'light-lid' attachment designed to scan in 35mm slides/negatives. A little touching-up in PS levels seems to produce an acceptable result. Other brands may have similar.

Quick? Economical? You get what you pay for. I've scanned 800+/- 35mm slides so far shot between 1966 and 2001. The usually need cleaning (Giottos Rocket Blower). The Nikon Coolscan 5000, or older 4000, have the best price/performance ratio on the market. Canonscan 9900 line is good. Better scanners are REALLY expensive, and cheaper flatbeds are, well, cheaper, mediocre for 35mm chromes. Employers, like mine, that are eliminating Kodak projectors, also usually have Nikon Coolscan or Canon scanners around to borrow. The bummer is that PowerPoint, or any business similar LCD projector can't hold a candle to the beauty and luster of good projected chromes. Digital beats film hands down, but NOT in projection viewing. With digital, it is the "medium" driving most people, not projected "image quality." With digital, quality shows on the computer screen or in print. An LCD projector with 1024x768 resolution and PP is just DULL. Have you friend check these:

I scan 48-bit 4,000 lpi. Scans start as 50 Mb files, about like a Canon RAW converted to .tif (only full of grain, dust, and scratches!). I could never have done it without PSCS history brush/noise and scratches, Photokit sharpener, and Noise Ninja.
Enjoy. J

Don't forget about the Minolta Elite 5400. 48-bit at 5400dpi is about 75MB files. With ICE4 you GEM, SHO, ROC and ICE. Its a great scanner.

I recently made a slide duplicator using the 300D. I would think that you won't need ultimate quality for PPoint, so you might consider this solution is your friend has a lot of slides to convert.
