OK, so Sun. I went to the LA zoo to play with my new toy

As I was checking it out, I pointed it up and looked into the lens. With that much light going in I could see a fiber or two inside the thing. One on the front-most part and a smaller one another element back -- I'm thinking this is not good.

Now, I bought the lens last week (ordered on the 15th, received on the 16th) -- I'm thinking this is not so much a warranty/manufacturer issue (from my side) as it is a vendor issue. Shouldn't I be able to get a replacement from the vendor instead of having to deal with Canon directly? I mean, it's been less than a week since I bought it.

What do you guys think?

Talk to your vendor.

I went through the same thing when I got my 70-200 L - had a couple of very noticable specks of dust or something inside the front element. Irritating, but I wanted to use it, not return it. So I tried it out and never noticed anything.

However, if you can give it up, return it for replacement. Normally I would do so, but it may be kind of a hassle if you have to pay for shipping back, and wait possibly a couple weeks to get another. If you have room on a credit card, order another. See if it's any better, and return the one that's not.

Yeah I'd just say it's a vendor issue, I'd only take it to Canon if it's something that showed up months after purchasing it

your only problem will be if you've filled in the warranty card, or cut the box for the barcode.
If you haven't, any decent vendor (Samys?) should trade it right out.
