580 EX...question?

My brother gave me the 580EX speedlight...I have a 5D, but have really never delved into flash photography? I want to shoot some basketball games of my son, and some other events in a gym....What setting should I be on? ETTL...what do I do to change the mm? I would probably be shooting a 85 1.8, or a 70-2002.8? I shoot in Manual on the camera, do I shoot manual on the flash? Help???

Check out all the threads on how to use a camera and a flash for basketball. They are on the SportsTalk and Sports forums. There are about 6,441,594 threads on the subject.

Here's a synopsis: Shoot in manual mode and set your flash to manual mode as well. Adjust everything to get good exposures and the action stopped.
