This is something totally new for me. My first attempt at catching a train. I was just out driving in the countryside and got held up by this train. It would have been better if I had been on the other side for the best lighting.

For a first attemp, that looks pretty darn good if you ask me. :) :) Don't see how you can say you were stuck, looks like if you gunned it you just might have made it across.  . I really like the angle you took the photo at,

No doubt about it.....trains are a lot easier to spot than owls. Probably a lot easier to photograph, too. Good railroad photography requires very little skill, but a bit of patience and a lot of luck. Many times, I've set up a shot to take advantage of favorable light and waited for a train to come by, and waited, and waited, and waited, and....... You get the idea. Then, your turn around and see a train coming at you from out of the sun, with no chance for anything other than an artsy fartsy high-contrast shot that you know is going to look like poo. (A CDS word).

Die-hard rail photographers usually carry radio scanners to monitor train movements, and will usually have more than a passing familiarity with traffic patterns in an area. A great resource for rail photographers is http://www.grumpysworld.com/menu.htm (note: if you have cookies turned off, you might have trouble accessing the site.)

I've posted this link before, but always consider it 'must' reading for train lovers, and good entertainment for everyone else.
