I can't afford a speedlight for my digital rebel and was wondering are there any generic hot shoe flashes that may be compatible with the Digital Rebel that angle and swivel? Mayble I'm reaching a bit, but I'm on a tight budget.

you can get a 420ex for less than $200 at B&H. Even cheaper if it's used. If you hack your drebel, you will have FEC. The 420 has both tilt and swivel.

Sunpak makes a couple that I'm aware of, and they're pretty cheap (around $100). Check out http://www.tocad.com/flash.html

I thought hard about a flash, and wanted something I could grow into, but unfortunately I could not afford the 550EX like I wanted...so I went with a Sigma 500 Super DG. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=352101&is=REG
So far, I am still learning it. Has a ton of features...and cheaper then the 550EX.

If you're on a budget, there are many flashes made by companies like Vivitar, Sunpak, etc. that you can use. They (the budget flashes) won't have ETTL but as long as they are thyristor controlled, automatic flashes, they'll work out just fine for you and your DRebel.

Actually the Sunpak PZ40X (that I am also currently evaluating) does have full E-TTL capability at a pricetag of about $126 from B&H.

Yes, that's true. I guess it all depends on how one defines "budget". For me, anything under $100 would be "budget" priced. :D
