He actually did most it by himself. He saved a little money and started making and posting the videos so that his family could see where he was. After a while he ran out of money but it was starting to be a hit on youtube. Striderite gum decided to sponsor him to for commercials.
Two more for later. They are both worth watching.

One of the best (and worst) things I have ever done is decide I wanted to learn how to make bread the old fashion ways. No bread machine. Just good honest ingredients and a lot of elbow grease. When the weather is cool like now it is not uncommon for me to make 5 or 6 loaves of bread a week.
My wife uses a combination of Kitchen Aid plus hand kneading. Five or six loaves of bread per week translates to roughly 4 pounds weight gain per month for me.:(

I dragged my equipment up a sizable hill to get a great sunset shot while hiking. I set up the tripod, camera, got all ready to go, waited until just the right light, set MLU, timer, pressed the shutter button and noticed that there was no CF card. A quick check of the bag revealed that I had no spares with me either. :(
Yup. I have many similar stories. It's brought me to a point where I carry a cheap 1 gig card in my wallet just in case. I've used it many, many times. In fact, this shot:

When I first got Turner he was 5 weeks old and I was renting at the time. I took him to meet the landlord and he peed on her shoe (in the driveway).
Today, Maggie went to daycare to meet the person and finalize everything. She was playing ball with a little girl and got in just the right position and decided to go on the rug! She said that lots of dogs had gone there. She did get to play with an 11 week old dachshund there! She didn't go today, Becky. She went to work with me instead. I couldn't make it work today. But she'll be there tomorrow! :)
That was pretty cool. She was great.
She was a major hit at work and with the Vet. I hadn't seen them in 2 years. So it was good to visit with them. They loved Maggie.
that's really cool Chris (re: the vet). What did the guys at work say when you showed up with her?
Glad you got daycare set up.

We're home! And, you guys moved while we were gone! And chatted *way* too much for me to catch up right now... :(
The trip started out windy. The only kind of windy you can get in the high desert. I guess that's why there are so many wind farms around here. Oh, and it was cold, too! So, we didn't stay around Johannesburg long. We headed to Ridgecrest, through Trona and on to Death Valley. The clouds looked kinda ominous everywhere, so we just headed straight through and on to Beatty, with a quick stop at the Goldwell Open Air Museum near Rhyolite. Some of the artwork has been damaged by the weather last year. :(
It started raining while we were in Rhyolite so we continued on to Beatty. We checked in, unloaded a few things from the car, then I took Minnie for a walk. We got about a half mile from the motel when it started to hail. Fortunately, it was light, fluffy pea sized hail. Barely much more than snow, really. If the hail stones were any smaller, I'd have to call it sleet.
But, we did find some snow today in the upper elevations on the western side of Death Valley. We also found a few things I'd heard of over the years (ghost towns, mines, trailheads, etc.), but had no real idea exactly where they were until now. I took a road, despite the posted warnings, that I've always wanted to explore. Wow! I have lots of new places to explore now! The only new discovery I stopped long enough to explore and photograph were the famous charcoal kilns near Telescope Peak. It was snowing there and I had to put my winter jacket and gloves on. Only a couple hours earlier I'd been exploring the salt pan around Badwater, sweating and cursing the glaring sun and how it seemed to reflect and radiate from every direction.
Funny story... On the way home a big-ass mile-long freight train backed up to let me get by. But that's probably one I should post in RRTP where the railfans hang out. But, I need to get a little sleep first. I'll catch up then post that tomorrow.

Besides, I don't eat much of the stuff anymore in an attempt to shed a few pounds. :D.... I too have had to seriously curtail my ingestion of white foods. It seems white foods are the source, or at least a major contributor to the tightening of pants. Not sure why white foods would make my clothing shrink, but I have done many years of experimenting and have concluded that indeed anything white, bread, potatoes, rice, vanilla ice cream, biskets and gravy, and anything else white does indead cause my clothing to shronk, especilly pants. I'm not sur why pants ar so affected, but they sure are.

With it being the dead of winter, I suppose any bears would be hibernating, what about other predators and what do you take to ward them off?
Some days we could easily do 15-20 miles if the conditions are right, either hard packed snow, or ice on the lakes. Other days we may only make it less then half of that, especially if we have to do a bunch of bush whacking in deep snow when going alongside open rivers.
Jasper would definitely come in the future, though I would like to start him out on something smaller, like a weekend trip.
Though I do take precautions, I never really worry about predators anyway. With bears I worry more about my food, then my own self, but as you mentioned, they will be hibernating anyway. There are wolves, cougars and lynx in the area, though not much worry here either. Wolves can often be seen and heard from a distance, but I consider myself fortunate if you can even get a sighting of one of the big cats, as they are very elusive and afraid of humans. Coyotes are so small, there are not too many folks around here that would fear them.

One of my fondest memories of all time was when I was hiking in the fall. I climbed up this ridge into a real strong headwind. Just as soon as I reached the top, I saw 3 lynx cubs about 20 feet from me. I then saw their mother scrambling down from the ridge away from me, though totally unaware of my presence. The cubs were heading along the ridge which tailed off down to my left, a much easier way to get down. As they came up to where I was, the first one saw me from about 10 feet away, and froze where he was. The other two saw me and carefully moved past me, then boogied down the ridge. The first on then turned around and followed the path his mother took, tumbling down the ridge the hard way. This whole event likely took less then 1 minute, but is something I will vividly remember my whole life.
