Hi everyone! I realise I didn't even post a single line in TPBM 19. Shame on me!

I've been quite busy lately with lots to do. My backlog of shots to process goes all the way back to October :o

I had a nice X-mas/new year break woth lots of skiing... I also spent a nice weekend in Paris ;-)

I'll try to be a little more present around from now on, but we'll see if it'll be possible or not ;-)

In the meantime, enjoy a first Giant's Causeway shot to decorate the new home's walls ;-)

Hehehe.

This thread title reminds me of when I used to do pub-quizzes.

There was a regular team that had the name of "Ken Dodd's Dad's Dog's Dead". It really used to annoy the landlord as he couldn't say it properly.

LISA - Thanks for leaving a trail of Oreos.

Was surprised, sort of, to see you moved during the night.

ERIE et.al. - Thanks for the comments on the Digisammich, here are the instructions for PaintShop Pro and Windows, I think PhotoShop is very similar, not sure of the terms and where your drop-down menus are, however:

Open picture file
CTRL-A (Select All)
CTRL-C (Copy)
CTRL-L (Paste as a layer)
In the Adjust Menu Choose Blur then Gaussian Blur
Adjust to 50% radius
Click OK
In the layers pallet change blend mode to multiply
Flatten all layers
And there you have it a nice digisammich. And they have 0 calories.
JIM - Jasper doesn't look like a pup anymore, he is a gorgeous dog.

JOHN - Our Circuit City had a bunch of Nuvi behind the check out counter, don't know what model number and they were only 10% off.

CAT - How do the directionally challenged get around, here most folks don't know the directions N, S, E, and W.

ZANE - Curt is getting his own computer, a new desk top. He was testing the time it takes to convert raw files on the current desk top compared to this lap-top. Mine is 3 times faster, he says what he is buying will blow this processing time out of the water. Ego. It will be good when we go to higher mega-pixel and color bit cameras.

Love the Harley, Bob, and you self-portraits.

HEATHER - No problem on the mix up, I think most of us have done simular at least once.

Hi Crissa, Becky

Crissa, to answer your question from last thread...no, the kids don't have any Spanish until 8th grade. I guess maybe in one of the elementary school classes they do because one of the teachers knows spanish. I'm certified to teach Spanish in the elementary but they never seem to work it into my schedule. Annoying.

People are expanding too. Heaver feet means more pressure on the accelerator and brake pedal. That means everyone drives fast, and stops fast leading to slower traffic in general. Now if everyone would just slow it down a bit we all would move faster when the whole trip is considered.

I saw this show once about traffic control in the future, actually I think it was a segment on a show, but they were debating the merits of variable speed limits to control traffic flow.

Hi Mike
G'MAE everybody.

My coins arrived over the weekend. (Most of them, anyway) They're pretty neat. I'll have to take pictures and share them. Oh, yeah ... btw, my hard drive is now in a clean room. I'm bracing myself to pay through the nose.
GA! I hope that it is not too horribly painful.

Wee.. on the other "forum" I frequent, we're discussing the best way to put out a Magnesium fire.

... why do all my conversations end in putting out fires? So what is the best way?

from the gas taps in the chemistry labs? They make good blow torches as well. We had a kid open it up and spark the sparker thingy. Said he wanted to see what would happen. Boy that sucker puts out a nice big flame.

...Imagine flower pic...That flower looks like it's giving you the finger... Well, maybe the flower is giving you the petal.;)

Sand or a Class D fire extinguisher.

Yes they do. Our Mad Scientist chemistry teacher did a demo for us.

We had a chemistry teacher at college who managed to light a hose with gas coming out of it. The hose was connected to the huge 5ft gas canister that he was standing next to.

When he discovered the end of the hose was lit, all he could think to do was blow the end of it.

All that we pupils could think of doing was run like buggery...

Thats got to be impressive when one lights up.

The aircooled motors where mostly magnesium. The cylinder heads were aluminum and a crappy grade of alumiinum too, that's why the spark plug threads seize up and strip out. The watercooled motors are almost entirely aluminum.

If they don't use a lot of liquid cutting oil the air also fills with dust. When it goes up the entire area will flash over.

I have heard. The ski hills here are way down in numbers, partially due to the global economic slump, and the fact all the Europeans that come here due to lack of snow closer to home are actually finding it there this year.

Everyone else knows, but I am headed out on Wednesday and will be back the following Sunday, doing a 120 km X-country ski tour, taking 8-10 days (barring not getting locked down by bad weather) to complete the circuit. I'm kinda pumped. :D

They made about 100 million of those motors. They worked out pretty well all things considered. They were strong enough as long as nothing went wrong. But if you broke a rod or something it could easily shatter most of the case (I did this a few times). I never caught one on fire accidentally. It takes a pretty good fire to get the chunks going.

I suppose that's true, a block of the stuff is much harder to ignite than a strip or some shavings. It must have been exceptionally light, though!

That was one of the big selling points...super light...and the air-cooling thing...all because of the magnesium....

If you did manage to get a VW on fire....you were better off to just step back and let it burn....more than one firefighter was injured over the years because they forgot about the magnesium and tried to fight fire with water.

It is in British Columbia, south of Prince George, in Bowron Lakes Provincial Park. This is a well know world class canoe circuit, that I did in September 2007.

If you fly Google to 53°10'33.74"N and 121° 4'37.21"W, you will be in the middle of the squarish shaped circuit.

A couple photos from our last trip.

We started out in glorious weather.

There are a few of these old trapper cabins that we can stay in (with the mice) around the circuit, though we will have at least 2 nights in a tent.

There are endless backcountry opportunity in BC. Good parts of the rivers are open so we have to ski along side them. This is by far the toughest going on the route. There are a couple places with portage trails, but for the most part you canoe the rivers in the summer so there are no trails there. If the snow is deep, and it is snowing all this week there, we will have a real slog pulling our pulks through the trees and bushes. For the most part we will be traveling on the lakes though, and they are well frozen. Talking with some locals, the ice is 12-16 inches thick, and you only need 1-2 inches to ski on.

I guess there are always some Trumpeter Swans that winter in the open waters of the Cariboo River. I am hoping to get some shots of them. All I am taking for gear is my 5DMkII, 24-105, 100-400, probably a light tripod, and maybe, only maybe the 17-40. I do have to lug this stuff so I probably will leave the 17-40 behind, and use either a gorilla pod, or one of those tripod kinda mounts that attach to a stick/pole/branch/or whatever to save some weight.
