I would like to nice to open this thread with some sample pictures but alas I don't (yet) own this monster.

But it is next on my wish list. If only the exchange rate would stop pushing the price up faster than I can save...

As well as the usual sample shots, I would love to see:
What the lens looks like on a 1D body with the hood in place
What it looks like hand held.
An uncropped moon shot. And the same with 1.4x and 2x
The bokehAlternatively, if this is too much bother, someone could like to lend me the lens - I would be happy to take pictures of it and with it :-)

It is only good for subjects more than 6m away, that fit within a vertical angle of view of 1 degree 40 minutes.

So, yes, that'll be the moon... :-)

Couldn't you zoom in on that? Bah, this lens musn't be all that good then...

OK do you guys that own this glass ever find that it is not enuf?

80% it is enough while 20% you will be glad to have a high MP crop or full frame body. Sometimes if you have enough length high humidity and high temperature forces you to go closer because the air shimmers.

I would love to see Canon make an EF 1200mm f/8L IS lens with 6 or more stops of IS that weighs less than 6kg. But we'd have to wait for a 1D body that can do AF @ f/8 and f/11 AF at the center. Price would be $15-20k?

Taken at a distance of about 20 meters, through a fence. (Chester Zoo)

Absolutely no PP done, except resize and crop.

And the white spot between eye and nose is a catchlight in a tear drop, not a hot pixel.

I just love this lens now that I have got it focusing right. I needed -7 microadjust. The contrast it delivers is wonderful. The IS is outstanding (and absolutely essential at this length, even on a tripod).

The White-breasted Waterhen (Amaurornis phoenicurus) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White-breasted_Waterhen) is a waterbird of the rail and crake family Rallidae that is widely distributed across South and Southeast Asia. They are dark slaty birds with a clean white face, breast and belly. They are somewhat bolder than most other rails and are often seen stepping slowly with their tail cocked upright in open marshes or even drains near busy roads. They are largely crepuscular in activity and during the breeding season after the first rains make loud and persistent croaky calls.

The Brown Shrike, Lanius cristatus is a bird in the shrike family that is found mainly in Asia. It forms a superspecies with the closely-related Red-backed Shrike, L. collurio, and Isabelline Shrike, L. isabellinus. Like most other shrikes, it has a distinctive black "bandit-mask" through the eye. and is found mainly in open scrub habitats, where it perches on the tops of thorny bushes in search of prey. Several populations of this widespread species form distinctive subspecies which breed in temperate Asia and migrate to their winter quarters in tropical Asia. They are sometimes found as vagrants in Europe and North America.

The Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio), also known as the African Purple Swamphen, Purple Moorhen, Purple Gallinule or Purple Coot, is a large bird in the family Rallidae (rails). From its name in French, talève sultane, it is also known as the Sultana Bird. It should not be confused with the American Purple Gallinule, Porphyrio martinica. The common name in New Zealand, used for the subspecies P. p. melanotus, is Pūkeko, which is the Māori name.

The Philippine Bulbul (Hypsipetes philippinus) is a songbird species in the bulbul family (Pycnonotidae). It is often placed in the genus Ixos, but is better retained in Hypsipetes as long as this is not entirely merged into Ixos, as it is quite closely related to the type species of Hypsipetes, the Black Bulbul (H. leucocephalus).

these pics are amazing, i always wanted to have a long focal length lens, but it seems like you must give up some IQ as you need more iso and shutter speeds at these ranges :( i don't know if its a rule but people say at 800mm you need atleast 1/800 of a sec hand held to get a sharp image, it's not easy to achieve that since light will be a problem

dolina
29th of March 2010 (Mon), 03:54
kloodee: the diminished IQ is from bad long lens handling technique. I could have slowed down my ISO and shutter if I wasn't so excited to see my first lifer. A faster 800 to say f/4 or f/2.8 would weigh more than 16.5kg. As for shutter speed I have managed to slow it down 1/50 on a sturdy tripod with shutter remote.

Hand held you could go 4-5 stops slower than 1/800 but you would need to be able to steady 6kg of gear.

The 800 has phenomenal IS. Canon claim 4 stops. That'll take you all the way down to 1/50 with good technique. They are not being unrealistic.

But the lens is heavy. You'll want something to lean it on something as often as possible.

On the other hand, the lens is so long that you'll want the benefit of the IS even when it is on a tripod. No kidding.

The Blue-tailed Bee-eater, Merops philippinus is a near passerine bird in the bee-eater family Meropidae. It breeds in southeastern Asia. It is strongly migratory.

This species is sometimes considered to be conspecific with the Blue-cheeked Bee-eater, M. persicus.
Blue-tailed Bee-eater from behind, showing the blue rump and tail

This species, like other bee-eaters, is a richly-coloured, slender bird. It is predominantly green; its face has a narrow blue patch with a black eye stripe, and a yellow and brown throat; the tail is blue and the beak is black. It can reach a length of 23-26 cm, including the two elongated central tail feathers. Sexes are alike.

Fort Drum (El Fraile Island), also known as the “concrete battleship,” is a heavily fortified island fortress situated at the mouth of Manila Bay in the Philippines, due south of Corregidor Island.

Originally a barren rock island, it was leveled by U.S. Army engineers between 1910 and 1914 and then built up with thick layers of steel-reinforced concrete into a massive structure roughly resembling a concrete ship. The fort was topped with a pair of armored steel gun turrets, each mounting two 14 inch guns. Searchlights, anti-aircraft batteries, and a fire direction tower were also mounted on its upper surface. The 25- to 36-foot thick fortress walls protected extensive ammunition magazines, machine spaces, and living quarters for the 200-man garrison.

After the outbreak of war in the Pacific on December 7, 1941 Fort Drum withstood heavy Japanese air and land bombardment as it supported U.S. and Filipino defenders on Bataan and Corregidor. Fort Drum surrendered to Japanese forces following the fall of Corregidor Island on May 6, 1942 and was subsequently occupied by Japanese forces. In 1945 as part of the offensive to recapture Manila, Ft Drum was assaulted by US forces. After a heavy aerial bombardment, US troops gained access to the deck of the fort on 13 April, and were able to confine the garrison below. Rather than attempting to break in, the troops and engineers pumped gasoline into the fort through air vents on the top deck, and ignited it, annihilating the garrison inside. With the fort neutralized, Japanese resistance in the Manila Bay area was ended. The ruins of Fort Drum, including its disabled turrets and 14 inch guns, remain at the mouth of Manila Bay.

The Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea), is a wading bird of the heron family Ardeidae, native throughout temperate Europe and Asia and also parts of Africa. It is resident in the milder south and west, but many birds retreat in winter from the ice in colder regions. It has become common in summer even inside the Arctic circle along the Norwegian coast.

It is a large bird, standing 90-100 cm tall, with a 175-195 cm wingspan and a weight of 1-2 kg. Its plumage is largely grey above, and off-white below. Adults have a white head with a broad black supercilium and slender crest, while immatures have a dull grey head. It has a powerful, pinkish-yellow bill, which is brighter in breeding adults. It has a slow flight, with its long neck retracted (S-shaped). This is characteristic of herons and bitterns, and distinguishes them from storks, cranes and spoonbills, which extend their necks. The call is a loud croaking "fraaank". The Australian White-faced Heron is often incorrectly called Grey Heron.

The Brahminy Kite (Haliastur intermedius Blyth), also known as the Red-backed Sea-eagle, is a medium-sized bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, which also includes many other diurnal raptors such as eagles, buzzards and harriers. They are found in the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia and Australia. They are found mainly on the coast and in inland wetlands where it feeds on dead fish and other prey. Adults have a reddish brown plumage and a contrasting white head and breast which makes them easy to distinguish from other birds of prey but immatures can be confused with a buzzard.

The Brahminy Kite is distinctive and contrastingly coloured, with chestnut plumage except for the white head and breast and black wing tips. The juveniles are browner, but can be distinguished from both the resident and migratory races of Black Kite in Asia by the paler appearance, shorter wings and rounded tail. The pale patch on the underwing carpal region is of a squarish shape and separated from Buteo buzzards.

The Brahminy Kite is about the same size as the Black Kite and has a typical kite flight, with wings angled, but its tail is rounded unlike the Milvus species, Red Kite and Black Kite, which have forked tails. The two genera are however very close.

The call is a mewing keeyew
