Depends on what you want to get shots of. There is a tour company there that allows you to get on and off their trolleys all day for about 35.00. They go everywhere in town, and have open sides so you can even shoot while you're moving to the next location. I found this to be the best way to get a variety of shots.

I understand there is a tour I can take on my own. A friend mentioned a "yellow line" on the street I can follow and see historic locations.
Do you know about this?

yeah I think it's called the Freedom Trail. But Boston is a bigass town and I think the trolleys are the way to go if you want to see and photograph as much of it as possible.

Boston is a compact city and everything is pretty much within walking distance of each other, subject to your preferences and the weather.

Here are some links that might help you get started:
An interactive map (http://************/54y2r) of the Freedom Trail, some suggested things to do (http://www.cityofboston.gov/visitors/thingstodo.asp) for visitors, from the City of Boston, and The Freedom Trail Foundation's suggestions for visitors (http://www.thefreedomtrail.org/visitors.htm#trail)

I haven't walked Boston with a camera in years, but now that I'm thinking about, I don't know why. Have fun!

I was born and lived there for the first 40+ years of my life. If you are interested in getting some pics of the Boston skyline then you need to go to East Boston, which is the part of Boston where Logan Airport is. Any taxi driver will take you there. Best spots are from Sumner Street, by the Maverick Housing Projects, where the skyline will present it's self accross a narrow stretch of Boston Harbor or Marginal Street which also gives you a fantastic view.

If you want a daytime shot of the skyline then you need to be at those spots at first light when the sun is hitting in that direction. I hope this helps you out, Enjoy your stay.

the harbor cruise that leaves from the aquarium gives nice opportunities for skyline shots also

Quincy Market is always interesting with many photo ops, as is Old Ironsides.
