Liberty State Park in NJ is a good place. I think it's exit 14B on the NJ turnpike. You can get some great night shots there.

Take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry or take a trip around Manhattan Island on Circle Line. the former is free and runs from the Battery (downtown) the latter runs out of the West Side near the Chelsea Piers

Would I be able to keep still on the ferry to take the night shot? I was planning on doing using a tripod.

mostly people shoot nyc skyline from nj - weehawkin, hoboken, jersey city -- why not try something different like roosevelt island or brooklyn?

The Brooklyn Heights Promenade in Brooklyn is a good place to get pictures of Lower Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge. Also try Fulton Landing at the end of Old Fulton St in Brooklyn. You can get right under the Brooklyn Bridge.

Have you been there recently? I tried to go there about 2 years ago just after sunset. There was a cop who wouldn't let anyone past a certain point on Fulton. I don't know if it was a security thing or a crime thing, but I'd like to go back if I could.

Edgewater, NJ is another place to get good views of the skyline. There is a restaurant on the water (the Crabhouse) that has a pier behind it you can set up your tripod on. The Chart House, in hoboken, NJ also has a similar setup, though it is a little more expensive restaurant.
You might as well get a decent meal out of it . . . i always think about food.
oh yeah, Exchange Place in Jersey City is a good view of lower Manhattan. That's where a lot of newspaper/magazine pictures were taken of the WTC disaster. it's easy to get to from NYC . . . one stop on the path train.

Personally, I like Alexander Hamilton Park in Weehawkin, which is on a height a little north of Chart House. You can get a pretty godd panorama of the skyline from the entrance to NY Harbor, all the way up to the George Washington Bridge.

Ah yes . . . good choice! For all you who are interested in history, I believe this is the place where Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr had their famous pistol duel to the death. Hamilton died in that duel. (i guess it would be called Burr park if the reverse happened).

Yep, that's a good location.
You can also drive by the river (Edgewater I think it is called) and fine several spots to set up your tripod. There is a track (for running) somewhere around there. You can get some nice shots there.
Here's a typical shot from the google map location you provided.

Edgewater is a great place but you have to go further south to get the real skyline shots, Edgewater is across from 135th street (approximately) and doesn't have the tall buildings you would see from further south like the empire State which is on 34th street. If you take a ferry out to the statue of liberty you can get some nice shots from liberty island, but I don't know how late they are open.

Although I hate to give NJ credit for anything, its the best place to get a shot of the city:
+1 for Brooklyn Heights for the east side, most likely you have to shoot north west from here, as west is not very pretty. You can get some awesome shots of the Brooklyn Bridge from there as well.
+1 jersey city, the boardwalk specially although you have to have a GOOD tripod as the winds pickup there at night.

You can get good shots of Manhattan's east side (U.N., Empire State, etc.) from Long Island City (Queens) right near the big Pepsi-Cola sign (I think it is called Gantry State Park). I'll try and post one I took from there but I am having some trouble with Fotki right now.

I have a similar question regarding picturesque places to take pictures. I want to take pictures of my car at a place where theres a nice backdrop... of perhaps a bridge, skyline.. etc. Any suggestions on where would I have easy access as well as a beautiful scenery for a backdrop? I'm located in Bayside, Queens but any suggestions other than Queens would be very much appreciated. Thanks.
