My Canon EOS 300D has started to show Error 99 so I took it to my local Jessops who said it was probably the contacts and it worked for a while. Now its started showing Error 99 again.
Any sugestions would be welcome.

Error 99 can usually be fixed by removing the battery for a minute and then re-installing. Try it!

I second the above.. I used to get those errors after changing batteries or my sd card. I recommend doing the above removing battery and reputting in.

It's usually to do with the contacts from lens to the body. My btand new 1D MKIV gave me an errot 99 ont he very first day. You can only laugh :-)

it is not very good news unfortunately the error 99 is what i had on my canon 1000D and i had to send it to canon as the problem will eventually make it so you cant use the camera thats what mine done and it was useless till canon fixed it there is nothing you can do to avoid it sorry to be so negative but thats the plain truth

hope that helps and happy shooting

Try another lens. Or borrow from someone else to see if it is your contacts.

Actually it's not "the plain truth".
Error 99 is a catch all for any non specific errors Canon have created a warning for.

Sometimes Error99 can just be a communication error between the lens and the body and can be solve quickly by taking the lens off and cleaning the contacts. Sometimes it maybe because the shutter has cr4pped itself, which necessitates a trip to Canon Hospital. Other times it could just be some random error that can be fixed by just removing ALL batteries (including the internal battery) and doing a hard reset.

Error 99 is not always terminal

Mine had it a d it was caused by the flash not poping up - mine was fixed with a swift drop from the top of an 8ft ladder

Not a repair method I would recomend

But the 99 error covers everything - most the time it is nothing just switch on and off again

My Tamron 17-50 gave me Err99 on both my 10D and my 30D when zoomed past 41mm, so that was due to an error in the lense.

So, as mentioned, it can be pretty much everything

ive been having the same problem my 30d has gone back to canon twice now 1st time round they said it was the shutter assembly, they replaced that i got it back still with err 99 after they said they tested it and it was fine. 2nd time round reading from the work sheet if it makes any sense :- REP - WORK...-
replacement shutter (parts)
replacement electr. bus system
repair mirror mechaninc
general cleanings
standard fault related redo (<6m pvo, ,3m opp)

SPARE PARTS :-
shutter ass'y
fpc ass'y MD
pcb ass'y DC/DC
fpc, shutter
mirror box ass'y
they said it was tested and fine i received it and 2 hrs later it was on its way back to canon after 5 shots every 5th shot is throwing
up err 99 ive tried cleaning the contacts on both battery and lenses ive used my friends battery and lenses, which work fine in his 30d
ive also tried a brand new memory card and letting it sit for 24 hrs or more with no batteries including the back up battery taken out. so i will see what happens when i recieve it back from canon for the 3rd time. its a bit worrying, anybody got any idea what can be done if they cant fix it? im not impressed as this err seems to be still happening with 40d's and 50d's and others and its really put me off buying another canon even though i have some of the rather expensive l series lenses too !!!!!
