All of my research so far on this lens shows much better performance on the focusing end far outperforming the IS on my 75-300mm IS. I can deal with the current cost of this lens as well and I love the stealth factor.

The problem is that I have seen some examples of bad lens flare (thanks to those who posted examples and web links) in conditions that I have found myself many times in the past. One showed the addition of the lens hood helping some, but the best result came from his/her hand held above the lens.

Here's the thing, I hate buying something only to have a new improved version out shortly after.

Sorry, never really asked my question did I. I want to take outdoor sports shots this season and already own the 75-300 IS.

1)Anyone have this lens last season and was it usable if the sun was anywhere in front of you? I did not have that much trouble at all with the 75-300 and lens flare. It was just slow.

2) Has anyone heard rumors of Canon's direction with the DO series?

Do you need a lens this compact?

Is portability and low profile your primary concerns?

If you answered no to these questions, skip this lens and get the 100-400mm IS for the same price (roughly)

If you answered YES to these questions and mean it,. then the DO is your lens!

I've never had trouble with flare,. I use hoods on all my lenses.
