View Full Version : Which metering mode to use?

I'm going to try my hand at photographing a kart race this weekend. This will be my first attempt at motorsport photography....
What metering mode should I start with? Spot?

I shoot a lot of motorsport (mainly rallying) & mostly use spot metering but it's worth trying all modes to see which works best, depends on the light conditions
Spot gets me pretty good results

I primarily use Evaluative metering mode and find it works rather well for me. I'm not sure if the 450D supports it but I move my AF to the * button and use my shutter button to take the exposure and fire the shot. I find for motorsports that this works far better for getting good results as I can track in AI-Servo and then lock the exposure at the last moment when I want the shot. It also helps a lot for objects traveling in and out of light/dark areas as you can retake the exposure without losing your AF.

I wouldn't use Av/Tv in most cases unless you want to get involved with Exposure Compensation (EC) & metering modes.
Why? This shows how the subject can affect the exposure & why manual keeps me worry free:
