I thought a bit about which forum to post this article into and decided on this one as it's all about people.

I took this photo (one of many) on Saturday 19th March in London at the Stop the War March and initially I rejected the picture for my photoblog. Then I took a second look and decided that it might look good in black and white. The original is below the b&w version.

Initially, I converted the image using Rob Carr's B&W photoshop action (http://www.slower.net/slowerlog/files/rob_carr_bw_conversion.atn) and then applied a gradient map (b&w) to add some more contrast. Then I applied some burning at 50% on the sign to bring it back into the picture. Next I changed the mode back to RGB and applied a photo filter 81 (15%) and to brighten up the image used the Shadow/Highlight feature to bring out the features of the protestors followed by a resize and final unsharp mask. I'm still experimenting with b&w and I'm quite pleased about the result which I think has rescued an otherwise dull photo. If you want to see a larger version you can see it here (http://www.andrewor.com/2005-03-19/img_1534.htm)

About the march itself. I was there just to take photos and there was one moment when when the adrenaline was really pumping hard which was when some protestors tried to set light to the US Flag. I was crouched down low to the ground ready for the moment - however they failed so I didn't get an awesome picture just an ok one.

I used a Canon 20D + 70-200L f2.8 IS USM and a 24-70L lens. I had to swap lenses a few times and did I get some exercise that day running around London with a rucksack full of kit! Next time I shoot a public event I might take by 10D body as well with the 24-70 attached.

If you want to see the gallery of pictures of the event, including this one, then you can look at my gallery here (http://www.andrewor.com/2005-03-19).

Nice protest shot. The B&W is MUCH better than the color, unless, of course, you really want to show this guy's true colors. Wonder what the gal was looking at in her cell phone. :)

I think she's taking a photo as well. Also I know the other side of the banner had a quote from George Orwell.

I think the expression on this guy's face is quite amusing. When I took the photo, I was 1 of 2 photographers taking his photo (hence he is not looking at me). I think he was just happy to have his photo taken. I wonder if he'll ever see this post.

Love the black and white. Thought I'd add one from the same day, but other side of the planet.

I agree the black and white is a lot better than the color. The detail seems to pop out more in the black and white. Nice shot.

I took these at the Republican National Convention in NYC this year:

I was using a 10D with 70-200 f/2.8 and a 1DMII with 24-70 f/2.8, with my supplies in a Newswear Digital Chest Vest. I really enjoy the spontaneity of PJ work. Trying to keep working without getting coralled by the police or stepped on by a moving crowd is fun in a sick sort of way.

Just a note to our members: The pictures already posted and the ones in my gallery may evoke strong feelings about patriotism and war. For the purposes of this forum, lets try to keep the comments about the photos from a strictly photographic/photojournalist standpoint.

Best regards,
Scott

Scott, those are amazing photos!!!! I'm really impressed. Initially I was wary about posting the original article but now I am not so concerned. What I like about the selection you've made is that each photo is very emotive. I think you've selected great photos for presentation. Good light as well. I'll use a fill in flash for my photos in london next time. One photo that amused me was the police officer or whatever with a sign on his chest saying "secret service". Hmm. Not exactly James Bond or CIA. made me laugh

retro, I took a photo at an odd angle as well to get the message into the photo. Did you do this as well or was that a creative crop? Either way it's effective.

Does anyone else have any protest photos?

Thanks for your comments. I was fortunate to have good lighting which isn't always the case in Manhattan due to all the tall buildings. All my photos are cropped and adjusted in PS CS.

Scott

Thanks. That one is right out of the camera. I was trying to fit it all into frame. Worked I guess. I thought they looked like two russian ladies.
