I was cleaning some sand out of my tripod (never got to it when I was in Hawaii in November). I had removed the leg segments and also loosened the screw that tightens the centre column. Next thing I know...

Well, I hope you know how to put it back...

It literally blew up in my hand... the centre column has a spring in it that somehow got loose and within half a second parts were flying everywhere.

Haha :-)
I managed to put it back together. For anyone else this has happened to (I doubt it), the centre column goes into the head that contains the level indicator first (it only fits one way). Putting the legs back on was easy, but the getting the spring to align along with the metal pressure plate was hard to do.
The trick was to shove the centre column back in first, then tighten the top of the housing that goes over the legs all the while pushing the spring against the pressure plate with a screwdriver through the hole that has the locking mechanism.
Fun stuff :-)
