Hi! My daughter Julia just turned 1 and man what a blast this last year has been. Last year at this time I was more than happy with my Canon G1........then I realized that I was taking A LOT of pictures of Julia and I was given a DRebel for my first Father's Day. Soon the kit lens didn't do what I wanted it to and I sprung for my first L glass (70-200F4; thanks Drisley!!) and while I really really liked that lens, it wasn't long before this 'sickness' manifested itself in short order and the 135F2, 100F2.8 Macro, 70-200F2.8, 85F1.8, 50F1.8II, 28-70F2.8. Then, since Julia is turning one I thought of the perfect excuse to get into the 1 series camera club!!:D So I traded my beloved 135F2 for a well-used 1D. What a great camera!! World's apart from a prosumer model and it's like driving a Porsche instead of a Ford! I am still in the midst of learning all that this camera can do and continuing to take many many photos of my daughter Julia. Enjoy the shots and thanks for looking and reading!!

She has beautiful eyes. You are a lucky person. In a few years you'll be waiting up for her to come home.

The photos are just breath taken so beautiful. She is a very beautiful little baby. I will have to say you did an excellent job on them. I have never seen any as nice as these 2 so sharp and vibrant. The eyes are beautiful.

Yes I totally agree with you about the 1D series bodys, theres more to it than just pixel count.
you need to use one to know.
quite a few 1D about now on the second hand market at reasonable cost compared to new 1D mk2.
Its the sort of camera that has a learning curve I think, don't expect to buy it and get all the camera is capable of imediately. the more you use & know the camera the better the results,
Now i've not overlooked your images, vary nice work.
Indeed no 2 is quite wonderful all things harmonise nicely , the colours of clothes relate real nice to the muted background col, the perfectly natural expression, incredible sharpness of the eyes
complete with only 1 catchlight ( the first shot i pos would have cloned out, leaving just 1)
Now did i mention depth of field, "JUST WONDERFUL" and a perfect demo of using an 85mm lens. sure is some quallity there.
just recently posted on dig cam section about this lens.
Keep up the good work.
Regards
Martin (Huckaback Photo)
PS. Nearly forgot to mention how sweet your Daughter looks, its me i'm affraid just got carried away talking about the image rather than the subject.

My daughter turned 3 just recently and I have another 4 month old...and I tell ya, it just keeps getting better. I haven't been able to get more equipment, but I've been learning more photoshop techniques to get me by. Great shots.

I just got the 70-200f4L and boy is it sharp like your pics show!
My kids have grown up- how I miss that age - perhaps I should start again?

Great shots :D
Almost makes me want to trade for a 1D also, but with one baby a little older and one a bit younger than yours, I don't see that happening in the short term.
Kids are definitely a great reason to get into photography. They change so fast in so little time. Before you know it your 'little baby' is taking her first driving lesson! Hee ;)

#1 is very good as always, and #2 is spectacular!
You are the king of the fill flash imho, and I love how the pink in the background perfectly matches her sweater.
If you keep this up, Julia will be a forum celebrity who we all watch grow up. Kind of kewl actually.
Btw, did you use C1 Pro for raw conversion, if you did indeed shoot raw?

How did you light the second shot? Your notes say that you didn't use a flash ... the lighting is very even and bright.

By george you are right HJM.
The eyes have very nice highlights, so I assume a fill flash was used.

Thanks for the kind words Drisley! Julia's pink bathrobe just happened to be hanging on the hook in the background (lucky). With the DRebel I usually shot RAW but sometimes JPEG (depending how much space I had left on the CF card!). With the 1D I am shooting RAW.......I haven't figured out the right tone curves yet and the JPEGS have this strange green cast. I am glad that I can take all these pictures of my daughter and share her growing up on this forum! Do you think she'll be as cooperative in 18 years??
BTW, first shot did indeed have fill-flash from my 420EX but the second one was in natural light from a large window (facing west). Just happened to catch the evening late afternoon light shining through and the catchlight in her eyes is what really made the shot so nice!!

Drisley........As you, with the DRebel I used C1 more for the RAW conversions until I noticed that the PSCS convertor had been massively improved and now that is what I am using...........yes, these are RAW pics from the 1D.

Yes, isn't PSCS Camera Raw much improved.
Last year I tried it, and while I liked the workflow, the output quality wasn't as good as C1 Pro.
But, each new version they have put out improves the output quality, and now I think PSCS has surpassed C1 Pro in image quality, especially for the 20D, when it comes to noise and colour accuracy.

Yes, I really like the PSCS RAW convertor. Since I know that I will be post-processing most shots taken with the 1D, it just fits into the whole workflow. The only quibble I have with PSCS is the file browser.........way to slow (at least on my machine). Still use breezebrowser to go through shots. What is the latest version of the Adobe Raw Convertor?

The latest version is 2.4
I can browse images quickly with the PS CS file browser (3500+ machine), but when it is open it really bogs down image editing, so I make sure to close it while working on an image.
You can also just double click on the PS CS desktop (gray area) which will open up the windows explorer, and from there just set it to THUMBNAIL.
