View Full Version : Rebel XT External Flash Problem

Just got my Rebel XT and all seems well, except for a flash problem.

I have two external flashes: A little Canon Speedlite 200E, and a high-end Canon-dedicated Sunpak that I used to use with my EOS 7 film camera.

With the Rebel XT, though, neither of these works. Fresh batteries, clean contacts (I hope), but the flash won't fire.

Any ideas on why this might be? Could I have changed a setting that's preventing this?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Andrew

Andrew, as far as I know, to use a flash effectively with your camera, the Speedlite must be model xxx-EX or something compatible with that. Your two do not appear to be either.

I think you're right about the 200E, but the Sunpak is an EX equivalent. In fact [embarrassed look] it turned out the contacts on the Sunpak were dirty. Once cleaned properly, it works fine.

So there's no way to get an older Canon flash to work? I'm surprised there isn't a way to 'go manual' on it. I use that little 200E for macro work, and would love to have it back.

I am surprised the camera can't at least trip the older Canon flash, even if it does not offer TTL flash?
