I got to shoot a 3 month old today! Heres one of the shots:

BTW only 430 EX II and 50 mm 1.8 was used.
Flash bounced camera right on white wall. I really need to make a makeshift reflector. Notice the dark right side of the baby, ugh.

Any way id love some C&C

This is still a beautiful pic though, better than I have ever done. That baby is gorgeous. I love babies!!!!! You did an excellent job with just your speedlite!!!!

Really cute shot Cortney! Oh, and instead of a makeshift reflector....just buy a cheap one on Ebay. :) I actually need to do that myself!

I like the contouring of the light on the face; the left side of the image did go a slight bit dark but I don't find it that bad. This is one thing where Lightroom's new gradient would make quick work of the problem -- drag a +.50 exposure gradient from left to right and voila.

oh and yea the kid is a doll; her fist in her mouth is great.

Very cute. I'm not overly bothered by the dark side either.

awww very cute. I am always amazed at how the little ones can fit their whole hands in their mouths LOL
Not bothered by the darker side in this one at all. I think it is well done :)

What a beautiful photo! GREAT flashwork BTW, and as far as the dark-side of the face... I think people put too much emphases on lighting the entire subject, whereas a little bit less light on the sides of the face help bring the face into the focal point! I love it, wouldn't change a thing!

BTW: I'd really love to know how you set that shot up. I mean I can see she's laying on a blanket, but what room did you do it in, and how was the lighting in the room? Is that a window drape in the background or a backdrop? Any external lighting?

Thanks, I really want to learn from you because I've been thinking about attempting to shoot my 5 month old like this. (50mm f/1.8 Speedlite 530exII)

So so sweet! I love it. She must have been getting hungry! I agree with Honduh chicken, can you share more about your set up please?

It was done in my daughters room. I found that the shape of her room is best for the lighting. Her room is more of a rectangle shape. I will :"paint" you a picture of how i did this in a few .. its bath time for My little one right now lol

I AM NOT the best illustrator lol

any way heres pretty much what my daugthers room looks like

The lamp is a standard, standing household tall lamp, and yes it was on more so that I can see what im doing lol. The window was WIDE OPEN. no shades down, no blinds, no curtains blocking.

Baby was on the fleece facing window side. I for this shot, I put her more so towards the edge of the blanket by the wall, and bounced the flash into the corner where the lamp is. That lamp really should NOT have been on, but oh well.. it turned out fine.

HTH
