Manfrotto 3021BPRO legs (black) with 322RC2 grip action ballhead. Tripod sticky in the Talk about Photography section really helped. Thanks all!!! This sucker's big and sturdy. I don't have to worry anymore about my camera toppling over.
Question: Do you guys always leave your heads on the tripod when it's not in use (storage or transport) or is it good practice to take it off when you're not using it?
Thanks again!!!http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gifhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gifhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gifhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

Mark,
I keep my legs nad head attatched and in a tripod carry bag. It is a real PITA to have to attatch the head every time you want to use the rig. In fact, I doubt that I could get the head off, it is probably welded on:)

I keep my 322RC2 attached in the upright position. Just remember if you get a tripod bag to get one that is about 6 inches longer than the tripod so you can leave the grip ballhead on there in the bag if you want.
One note about the 3021BPRO that is probably obvious to most but wasn't to me right away, if the weight hook on the bottom of the center column is slightly loose, the column will have a little play in it. I'm not sure if all the 3021s are like this, but the one I tried was.

yea, I keep the head on as well... it's got a few set screws in there to keep it on, so it's not coming off every time i put it away.

I almost always remove the head. I carry my tripod lashed horizontally to the bottom of a pack and the head is too vulnerable to knock into things. If I could lash it vertically I'd probably leave it on.

Hey Mark, congrats on your purchase, Ive been looking for a sismilar combo, but the 3021 is a bit on the heavy side, seeing as im travelling. Looking at the 3001 BPRO with the 322rc2. I have a 20D with a tamron 28-300. What u think?

I have the 3001Pro Legs and a 3030 head, and it's just as solid.... the weigh difference is not that big though

You call that heavy? Try my Bogen 3051 at 13.5 lbs.
I keep it set up next to my desk at all times just in case we ever have an earthquake. I'm crawling under it.
Just kidding.

Nice. I have the same one (actually a Manfrotto 055 PRO B, but that's the one that's called 3021 B PRO in the USA - why do the names and numbers always have to be different...??).
Before I had this one, I had the 055 DB, which has the same legs, but has a simpler design (you can't take out the center column, for example). I ordered the PRO B but when I went to the shop to get it, they told me the PRO B was an old model and that it had been replaced by the DB. That was not true - the shop sold me a simpler tripod for the price of a more advanced one. I'll never buy anything there again!
I have a 488 RC2 (USA: 3026) ball head with it. It can easily hold my 10D.
I never take off the head.

Leo.Just go to http://www.bhphotovideo.com and look it up. Manfrotto's website is http://www.manfrotto.com (note, in the USA Manfrotto's tripods are also sold under the name Bogen).

Hey Belmondo, what do you mount on that thing, a Bazooka!!!! I just found that the 3021 is a but heavy to use as a travelling tripod. But im glad i dont need to lug around 13.5lbs!

I bought it from a local camera store, but B&H has a Bogen/Manfrotto section in their tripod website. Also, here is the sticky that i referenced earlier.

It was really helpful in choosing.
Also, I would strongly urge you to go to your local camera shop and at least look at the tripods when their all open and extended. I wasn't considering the 3021 until I saw that it opened up perfectly to my eye-line and i could see how sturdy/stable it was. The sales guy sat there and showed me the features of it. I was also able to play with the different heads (ball and 3-way) to see which one was best for me.
good luck!

if i'm not mistaken, i think the 3001 was a little smaller, but not much lighter than the 3021. If you're travelling, why not consider the Carbon legs. they're just as strong, but lighter (and much more expensive).
I also have a Velbon Ultra Maxi that I got for my trip to Disney World earlier this year. i wanted something strong that would fit in my backpack while we were walking around. Closed, it's about a foot long, but it opens up wide and pretty tall (with the center column). The legs are made of metal and have a twist-locking feature for quick and easy setup. I mostly put my Drebel+tamron 28-75 on it. It was very stable. Here is a night-shot that I took with it.

Back in the Cold War days, school children were drilled on "duck and cover" for protection during a nuclear attack. Belmondo drills on "duck and shoot" with his rig.

I use that combo as my main set.
I also use the smaller 3001bn with a 3030 head. I found the smaller one just fits in my bag when flying, the larger does not.
Nice night shot.BTW.
