Macro Speed Challenge #12 -
Sugar & Spice and ....
Have you ever looked at spices and other seasoning goods through the macro lens? If not, here's your chance. See what kinds of creative photos you can come up with using cooking or seasoning items as your subject. Whether it's your favorite herbs, spices, oil/vinegar... take your best macro shot of it. The only extra guideline I'll add is that the main subject of the photo must be edible and a spice/herb/seasoning. Other items (knives, plates, etc) can be in the shot, but they should not be the main subject of the photo.
There are all kinds of interesting spices in your kitchen. Go get creative with them in macro!

Macro Speed Challenge #12 - Sugar & Spice and ... is officially closed.

I'll try to announce the winner in a little bit, but you folks are making it tough!!

Well, you folks didn't make this easy, but you did make me hungry looking at the photos! All the garlic, oil, sugar, spices, herbs, sweets was making my mouth water. I had to review them over dinner. :)

There were some great entries this week!! Thanks to everyone who participated. I hope you had fun shooting. I was looking to see how creative and detailed you could get with this challenge. Rather than trying to comment on them all (which could take a while), here are my top 3:

Monty28428 (Cinnamon sticks) - I really liked the patterns of the cinnamon sticks and the shadows. It was a nice arrangement. I see them in the spice can on end but hadn't thought about photographing them.

Frenchfx (Mrs. Dash) - Nice, colorful, detailed picture with great selective focus and composition of the spices. I never tried Mrs. Dash, but maybe I will now.

and my vote for the winner this week goes to...
ghud321 (Salt & Pepper Yin-Yang) - I loved the creativity of your shot! The detail on the peppercorns was great, and though the white of the salt around the edge seemed a little bright at first, it wasn't too much. The more I looked at the shot the more I liked it. The placement of the single salt grain and single peppercorn must've been a bit tricky. Congratulations!!

Thanks again to everyone. I loved looking at your shots. I think that's half the fun of macro, being able to see things that are small as we normally don't see them. I liked something about every single entry, and picking a single winner was a challenge of its own!

WOW!!! All the entries were fantastic!!! I can't believe mine won...

So this is my 1st competition I've entered on here (not to mention my 1st macro shot) so I have a few questions on how to start the next one.

1) When do I start it?
2) How long does it run for?
3) Do I have to post the results anywhere?

Thanks everyone,
Geoff

I had a blast! I know I did not officially have a macro lens, but I hope to soon. Can't wait to do it again.

Congrats to all the entrys... I knew I didn't have a chance after the Yin-Yang entry but still wanted to have some fun...

fwiw my "Firey Face" was housed in a Habanero head... and I took it becaue frankly I didn't have any great ideas...

I probably won't be able to get anything in this week as I'll be somewhere warm this weekend... and won't have my macro lens (I will however have my 10-22mm lens and hope to be hanging on the outside of a plane or two with it... :D

Edited to add: pennypue, I'm glad you made it home safe the other night... I noticed y'all got some serious snow in a short period of time in Cincy the other night... it missed my area completely...

Thanks everyone... I'm looking forward to judging the next competition... If the entries are anything like the ones I saw this week, its going to be really tough to declare a winner.

John_B, yours was my favorite and it inspired me to come up with something really creative so thanks for that :)

That's good to hear! Judging these things is tough! Kudos again to everyone. I get to shoot in the next one, if I can come up with something good for Geoff's unique challenge.

Icon, thanks for the info on your picture. I was trying to figure out what all was in your shot and feeling ignorant. Your smiley face was cute! What were the other things (not habanero)?

Here's a shot of my happy little habanero head (he's got a bit of a cowlick)...

http://www.scottgunstills.com/photos/468375573_rBcXZ-L-2.jpg

The Eyes and nose are pulled from a peppercorn blend... (White's, Reds, black, etc...), the Face itself is ground Cayenne pepper, and the mouth is made from crushed red pepper seeds.

all in all the little guy is pretty fiery... I did opt to use latex gloves when preparing the Habanero... because frankly it can get pretty uncomfortable if you don't...

I think I like this uncropped version better than your original post. He does look like a happy habanero head now! I thought that was cayenne pepper, but I was lost on the white parts. I'll never look at my hot spices the same again!
Smart idea on the gloves. I use those whenever I'm cutting hot peppers for chili. All it takes is one accidental pass by the eye or mouth to not do that again. Washing hands doesn't easily get that stuff off!
