So my wife wanted to see what this picture would look like in B&W with the eyes colored. I think it looks alright. There are a few other tweaks I threw in because the original picture was really washed out. C&C appreciated.http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3080/3235059131_cd7aee71d2_b.jpg

Its not too bad, I cant comment much on all the technical stuff, BUT im not a fan of selective coloring, and i know there are people here who feel the same. its sort of out with the old in the with new type thing. Sometimes it can be really nice , but when used properly.. Selective coloring of the eyes is highly over done that it doesnt bring the "ooooo ahhhh" factor too much anymore... trust me i learned that as Soon as i started posting here.. My first picture i posted was a black and white with eyes blue.. it got shunned like no other lol

The whole 'blue eyes with b/w' has been overdone IMO, even more-so than the extended exposures with water.

Aside from the color PP, here are my grades of the photo:

Focus - A
Composition - B (I would have liked to see the whole head... don't chop the top)
Exposure - A

I think the blue eyes against the black and white of the image makes a nice statement.

I know it might be overdone, but it is my FIRST time doing ANY kind of editing to a photo since I got my wife her Xsi. She wanted to know what it would look like so i obliged...Now she's jealous and wants me to show her how to use gimp, lol.

Generally speaking, I dislike selective coloring. It has to have a strong reason to be done (and "my wife wanted to see what it would look like" surely qualifies as a reason for the experiment!), and that reason is lacking in this image. It's a nice shot, but the selective coloring does nothing to add to it.

I think selective coloring on eyes is like marmite, you either love it or hate it.

I think the edit is nice, although its not something I would choose to do

Personally I dont like selective coloring, but I think everyone tries it now and again for whatever reason. Some people love it so it is really about personal taste. You did say that this was your first attempt at pp, so that being said I think you did great for your first time. Keep it up and remember it is not about what everyone else thinks of your images, it is about what you think of them. :)

i to have done the selective coloring thing and agree with the above "rebelchick" put out that link and this is something that i would look at....

PP is an ongoing process of learning and failing (believe me) i know from experience.

Can you remove the black circle around each iris? Black pupil is o.k., but not around the iris

I too am not a big fan of selective coloring although I like Kristie's versions in the link above. It's great though that you are learning new pp skills in trying different things.
That being said I don't mind the picture. Can you show us a colored version?

I have to go with the general concensus of.. "not a fan of selective color" but it's GREAT to experiement, now you know how to do it. :) So it's a good thing.

I just always thought it looked unatural and distracting. My favorite way to draw attention to eyes is to use a wide angle, get up close and personal, and get that twinkle with good lighting. The best "eye" photos I've taken of my daughter were right after she got done crying. :p the tears wet them up and kind of matt her lashes together making the eyes pop! Not condoning making your kid cry, but when they do, it's an opportunity. :p
