Here is a test image, tonemapped in qtpfsgui:

http://qtpfsgui.sourceforge.net/

and tweaked in PS. Shot in 1 EV increments, as JPEGs. I used PSCS3 to make the HDR, then qtpfsgui to tonemap, followed by curves, WB, etc. back in PS.

I used this image to see what kind of detail I could preserve throughout the dynamic range - the texture in the lampshade, the mid-tones of most of the image, the bright light striking the fern, the translucent light projecting green through the fern leaves, the shadow tones in the cabinets. The GMB color checker was nice to have around too - you can see some funkiness in the last row (the grays) where the "white" patch on the left is gray - such is life trying to compress the range. Fun!

Interesting side by side of the different ways the camera saw it and then the combined product. Thanks for sharing.
The only thing that comes to mind as an artistic discussion is, if desired,
how to add in a little of that mood that you see on the bottom pix in the center column
that comes from the depth of shadow as the lamplight quickly falls away into the darkness.

The falloff of the lamp is interesting, but the actual scene is more accurately represented by the tonemapped hdr than by any of the individual exposures. There was more ambient light in the scene than any of the individual exposures in the mid-range show. That is, the relatively intense local luminance of the lamp overwhelms the ambient background level. The tonemapped version renders this much better. That is the whole point of hdr!

That's a very nice HDR, very natural looking.

I don't suppose you would mind posting the original exposures for others to test out using different HDR apps/methods to contribute to this thread?

Thanks! I'll put them in a dedicated gallery on my smugmig page and post the link here.
