Is there a free Photoshop Manual available on line that I can download? I can't find one on the adobe website. I'm using ver 7.0.

I don't know about PS 7.0, but with PS CS you can find almost everything you want to know in the Help function. There are also a lot of books available on Photoshop. Just go to a book store and browse through them until you find one that suits you. Or do you explicitly want the original manual?

there are so many tutorials on the web and books in the shops - i wonder why you want the orginal manual.
heres some links I have posted on a Digital Photo website

my advice on Books would be to goto a local store aand start reading - you will find lots of different styles and find the sytle that you prefer

My advise would be to forget the manual and find a book on Photo editing using Photoshop. The manual will just tell you how to access and use each tool, it doesn't explain what they are doing to you image. The "Photoshop Artistry" series by Barry Haynes and Wendy Crumpler are excellent. Since Photoshop 7 is now "outdated", you should be able to pick up the Photoshop 7 Artistry edition at a good discount on Amazon or E-bay. Or even the 6 edition would suffice, since there wasn't that much change between 6 and 7... :D

Adobe PhotoShop CS, newly installed about one week ago on Windows XP.
Virtually nothing in the Help Menu functions. The F1 key does nothing. The manual says nothing about PhotoShop help. Adobe Online does nothing. The Help tutorials go nowhere.
What's wrong here?
Just to make sure that I was not dreaming, I put the installation disk back in to try to re-do the installation, and there was a message that it cannot be installed since it is a fully functioning installation.

That's strange, Bob. Been awhile since I installed my copy. Perhaps there was an option during install not to include the help files and it was inadvertantly checked? I always do a custom install if given the opportunity so I know what is and is not being installed. When is the last time you checked you hard drive for errors? Have you uninstalled and gone through the install again? Did you install over an older copy? Sorry I can't be more help, that's all the possibilities I can think of that could explain your problem.

Due to the complicated installation process with serial numbers and activation numbers and all that, I am reluctant to just go jumping into a repair until I talk to Adobe Tech Support first. That will be 6 a.m. PST Monday. Let's see, that is 7 a.m. PDT.

The PS CS help appears in a web browser for me, when I hit F1.

Yes, Tim, that is what I would expect to happen. Not on this one. I suspect that it is a failed installation, so I will simply hassle Adobe about it first thing in the morning. They will probably try to give me static because I did not do the online activation (I activated it by telephone and plugged in those numbers).

Isn't that special?
After twenty minutes on a toll call to Adobe, I found out that Windows XP SP2 blocks Adobe Help from the menu or F1 key. The work around is to open a web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) outside of Adobe and browse the local drive to Adobe CS and find Help.html
That seems a bit awkward, but at least it works. Of course, none of this is documented in the Adobe manual.

It works on my Gateway laptop, and that surprises me because I assumed I had SP2 installed. How do I check?

If you go into your Control Panel, System, General tab, it should show you the Windows version info.
But, to do that, first you need to make a toll call to Adobe and give them your credit card number....
<I jest>

Ah, So.
I do have SP2 installed, and I can access Help from the drop-down menu and the f1 key. I'll try it on my desktop boxes later.

Isn't that odd?
The Adobe Tech Support guy was very specific, and it took him no time at all to come to this conclusion, and his workaround advice worked.
Hell, I don't know.
He seemed pretty good. And he knew you. He asked if you had seen any tripods lately.

Just think about it, though.
Some undocumented migrant is probably using that tripod to jack up his truck so he can change the tire.

I don't know Bob. I think you were given the run around. I've had SP2 installed a couple months before I bought CS, and I have no problems accessing the help files. But, then I'm using Firefox rather than IE. That might be the difference.

So, let me get this straight...
I'm the only one in Canon Land whose Adobe PhotoShop CS menus don't work right?
Hmmm.

Bob
Do you have a new computer that came with XP SP2?
The reason I ask is that I have just bought a load of new PCs for work. They came with XP SP2.
MS Office doesn't work properly and one of Microsoft's finance packages doesn't work either.
HOWEVER PCs that came with XP SP1, that I have updated to SP2 via Windows Update run both the Office 97 & Finance packages fine.
You can see where I'm going with this.
Guess you'll disprove my theory here. :D

XP may be blocking the help via the firewall and/or pop-up blocker in SP2. Just a thought.

I just checked my pc which has had sp2 since last fall. I installed PS CS last month and just now when I hit F1 key the Help menu opens but I get a warning that Internet Explorer has restricted this file from showing active content that could access my computer, and that I should click for options. I'm guessing that your security level may be higher than mine is and its blocking the entire help menu??

Well, we strongly suspect that Windows XP is in fact interfering with the Adobe HTML help screens. I think that was established yesterday.

Hello Bob
I only asked as you had replied when I asked about whether you had a new PC with SP2 already on. I thought you may have missed the suggestion about the Firewall & Pop ups.

At this moment, firewall and popup suppression is all turned off.

Another couple of suggestions Bob.
How about loading a different browser. Make that your default and see if the help works.
Create a new User Account (with Admin privs), log in as that user and see if the help comes up.
Although these wont fix your problem it may help to narrow down, exactly where the problem is?

Bob, are you using one of those keyboards that you need to press a F Lock key to use the function keys? I'm just fishing here. Pardon me if you find this being ridiculously dumb.
robertwgross
7th of April 2005 (Thu), 13:09
It's a standard keyboard. I always keep a fairly generic setup without special bells and whistles.
Adobe says it is a Windows XP SP2 thing. Adobe says I have to browse the help files outside of the main application.
I've tried multiple browsers, and they all do the same. That suggests that it is still a Windows thing.
I've set security options up and down, and it always does the same.
