Can I safely use a Canon 580 EX II on an old Nikon F4 film body? I'm assuming the flash must be used in manual mode right?

No, the 580EX II has an automatic external flash metering mode that can be used on any camera just like an old thyristor flash. It is on Page 30 of the manual. Also check out this link: http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=GetArticleAct&articleID=946
