Hi all, I'm a new member to this site and from what I've seen it looks like there's a lot I can learn from ya'll. I was hoping someone could answer a question I have regarding the Canon EOS digitals. I have a 35mm EOS Rebel 2000 and am wanting to switch to digital. I've been looking at the 20D and the new Rebel XT and I was wondering if the lenses I currently have for my Rebel 2000 are compatible with either of those models. I have heard mixed opinions on this. Do the EFS lenses have a different mount from my old EF lenses or is it just an update in the internal lens design?

EF lenses work fine, EF-S lenses will work on the 300D, 350D/XT, and 20D, but won't work on the Rebel 2000 or 10D.

G'Day. Welcome. The old lenses will work fine ! EF-S is specific (so far to the EOS20D, 300D and 350D..but the ordinary EF lenses are compatable too !.

Dolphingirl,

welcome to the forum!

What lenses do you have from your EOS film camera?

Best regards,
Andy

Though your lenses will fit the new digital bodies, with most of the digital bodies (the exception being the $8000 "professional" models) there will be a perceived difference with all of your lenses. The reason is that the digital image sensor is significantly smaller than the 35mm film frame. Thus, a picture will look like the lens is about 1.6 times the actual focal length when compared to a picture of the same subject taken with the same lens on your 35mm body. It's purely because of the "media" size and there is no other real change to the lenses.

The "normal" lens for the 300D, 350D, and 20D digital bodies is about 31mm, not 50mm like for a full-frame 35mm body. Thus, anything shorter than 31mm is wide angle and anything longer than 31mm is telephoto with these bodies.
