View Full Version : Pelican case owners - what do you have, and what does it fit?

I'm looking into getting perhaps a couple of pelican cases, rather than one giant one to fit all of my stuff. This way, I can take some of my stuff on trips, and lock and attach it securely to the car - and my house, and have a couple of size choices depending on the trip. I also don't like the idea of having a box that fits everything, and having that weigh the same as me (I'm not very big).

I don't have the luxury of trying the cases out, as local camera shops don't have a great range, and their cases have foam (the fluffy stuff) rather than the inserts.

So, what pelican case/s do you use, and what do you put in it?

I have the 1510 with the dividers and accessories bag that fits into the lid. It doesn't hold all my gear tho......one of my long lenses and my flash units are left out. Outside of that, I love it's portability and durability. It is heavy when fully loaded, tho.

I have the 1600 with dividers and a lid organizer. I lug it around to in home portrait sessions and weddings. At outdoor events I usually leave it in a secure place or my car and carry a smaller bag with just the essentials. My entire strobist studio kit is in here, save for the light stands which is in another light stand bag. You can catch a glimps of what's in it here:

I have a 1510 and it fits a lot, 70-200 2.8 IS, 1d3, 24-70, 1.4x, 17-40, 50 1.8, 580ex II, lightstand, umbrella, and a whole bunch of incidentals...

Ring up stu at quality camera sales, he'll help you out

If I were you I would go for one giant one for home storage, a 1510 for airline travel, and a little one that fits your minimum kit for going light...

Pelican 1614 like Keener. Love mine. Best investment for storing gear at home I think.

I have the 1610 with deviders and lid organizer. On trips ( by truck ) I keep everything in it and it just fits. Stays fairly cool in heated industrial canopy overnite. I shoot mainly morning and evening , so don't want to have condensation , I'm usually in the mountains so overheating isn't a problem. I take what I want for the next few hours into a lowepro backpack or hipbelt . But I don't really trundle the whole thing about ,just grab what I need and go. It makes a strudy seat outside on the ground .
If you get a 1510 or two and still need to carry a tripod , check for a third arm cause most people don't have one. BTW I can leave the 5D with 300 f 2.8 IS with hood on and 1.4 extender ready to go down the centre . My two cents--- Gage
The laptop ( 17 " ) lays on top as well

I just bought a 1510 for a trip/assignment that I had over New Years.

It fit:
2 camera bodies,
300 2.8
70-200 2.8
16-35 2.8
and misc cards, batteries, chargers.

Easy to wheel through the airport, not 1 question at security, stuffed right into the overhead bin. I would recommend the lid pouch and divider set. I'm probably going to order both, just went with the basic foam at first, which don't get me wrong worked well, but I think the adjust ability would be good.

I have a 1610 I use for my Ikelite housing, dual ikelite DS51 strobes, strobe arms, Canon 20D body with 17x85mm lens, 3 lens ports and misc. cables. I use it for when I travel to dive and do photography. I haul the 100mm Macro, 50MM macro and any topside lenses in a shoulder bag or backpack (usually with the 20D.) Love the handle and wheels! If I need to I can take te foam out and just wrap everything in

Thanks for the info and tips guys, much appreciated!

I'll have to have a think about what I want to fit in - for home and trips now, but will definately be going for the divider set for whatever I get, as it's much easier to adjust for different gear, rather than the foam stuff. Hopefully a shop in town that is closing down will have some pelicans for good prices....

If you mean plaza, they already finished selling everything IIRC...

Stu/quality camera sells them for decent prices.... (where I got mine)

I was just thinking about this but I don't need anything this big but I really don't know which to get. All I need it to fit is a 40D, 17-40mm and a 70-200mm f2.8. I am going to use foam instead of dividers so what going to best the best fit?

Boo! I just saw the sign on the weekend, and went down over lunch time. Had a nice walk in searing heat to figure that out....I'll be comparing prices of a few online shops, including Stu's.

Lots of shops don't appear to sell dividers...
Dividers are a must for me, increases versitility, pulling out bits of foam to fit things, then re-packing to fit something else is not my idea of fun!

Alice; I've recently bought a 1610 and 1510 with dividers and have just posted up another review of the 1610:

If you want good prices in Australia talk to Trumples (John) who hangs out on the Brissie thread - great guy, helped me out with mine and I would deal with him again anytime.
