After 19 days away from the JLA the Wings' played poorly during the 1st period and the Stars' power play was solid along with Netminder Turco stopping some excellent chances by the Wings'. Dallas jumped out to a 4-0 1st period lead, Wings' narrowed it by 2 but lost 4-2....... Several goals disallowed due to video replay and goaltender interference...... :)

Great pics! The DOF is fairly deep. What are the specs (EXIF) on these?

I don't know squat about hockey but I do know when I see a photographers work who does. Well done but wish you had opened up maybe a bit more.

Mike, In hockey the editor looks for eyes, puck and action. When you have the glass and crowd that tends to be a distraction plus glare and shadows, so we have been told to crop tighter........ hope this helps and thanks for the comments... Still like to look in the background and see the crowds reaction.... some pay all that money and are not even looking in the direction of the play..... Detroit is an exciting team to watch, imagine what the crowd is like in other venues!!! :)

white balance seems off quite a bit.. i would try and fix that.. not bad action shots...

Can't get no wider- my apologies.

You need the 200 f/1.8 then ;)

Dave.... Interesting that you said that. I double checked with our editor just a few minutes ago and he said everything looked great. On my monitors (LaCie 724) it looks ok. Just finished calibrating both of those last week. I use dual monitors, but if anybody else wants to comment I am always open to CC :)......

It looks a bit like Detroit's ice maker has a yellow tint to his ice.

The Dallas Uni's are nice crisp white. The ice (particularly in the last shot) has a bit of a dingy yellow feel. I don't think WB is wrong. Just dirty ice.

DragonSpeed, even when shooting strobed, there is a difference. The 60hz light cycle plays havoc. Using the eyedropper in PS will help, but so minor not even worth the effort. WB off the ice will cause the whites to be blown out. another photog and myself have been trying different settings, he is shooting the Nikon D3 and having a fit trying to get the WB correct. One of our major papers just switched over to Nikon from canon....

Nice shots. Do you use strobes or ambient?

Great shots! And the good guys won---for a change!

This gives me ideas and inspiration for shooting my local HS team.

Nice action shots Tom, as usual... And the ice may have a ssslight tint but I wouldn't have noticed it myself, just a lighting dilemma like you say. If you ever need someone to carry your gear around let me know..;)

Love your shots Tom. Helps that I'm a big Wings fan!

You said that you're trying some new settings as far as white balance goes. What are you trying? I just shoot minor hockey but have noticed on occasion that when I take a white balance off the ice and am increasing exposure in Lightroom after; when I get the player looking good the ice is blown out. I've really got to work on my PP. Just picking up what I read here and trial and error basically.
Really liked the shots you got of Steve Mason from Columbus a while back. My daughter (a goaltender) is a huge Mason fan. We watched him here in London when he played junior.

Are you using a gray card or one of those exposdiscs? I'm interested to hear what you come up with. I wb off the ice 9/10 times, and sometime I still end up tweaking it in PP. That's ok, but it is another step in the flow that would be good to lose.

I'm sure there's a big difference between how you need to set with your strobes and NHL lighting, compared to the often dungeon-like settings of the community rinks I hang in.

Great job by the way. I was going to contact you early last week... asking if you were headed to the Joe for the UM/MSU game last Friday 1/23. I was in the area; one of my kids was in a tournament Down River, and about 25 people from our group went in to see the game. It wasn't in the cards out for me, but I was considering it early in the week, thinking maybe I could partner up with you for a night.

Cheers,

Darcy
