I have been using a speedotron lighting system for about 15 years and am ready to purchase a new systerm...but what brand....who's who out there these days. i always do car comparisons....so...i don't know the difference between a pinto/maverick and a vette when it comes to how the current
companies rate. Help! What type of system/kit would you buy if you had $1500, (digital portrait photography w soft boxes)? I hear that speedotron no longer rates where they did years ago...at least not for digital.
I have looked into the continous lighting systems but after ready different comments on this site, i've decided not to take that route. (first time user of this site)

whynot get yourself a couple alien bee b400's, medium octabox or a beauty dish?

There are many manufacturers. Alien Bee do seem to offer great value in your country. Their White Lightning kits are slightly more expensive and better built.

Elinchrom gear may be more expensive but the quality and build is excellent. There are others some poorer some better (but more expensive again).

You get what you pay for.

Look at the accessories available for the lights you buy then make a decision.

I bought Elinchrom.

I have elinchrom and enjoy them. Searching "studio strobes" should give you a good list of the "whos who" in studio lighting these days

I really like my Alien Bees. There is also the Elinchrom D-lite kits around that price point that get great reviews.
