I had no idea how challenging these moon shots actually are, now I know! I hope you enjoy this one and all comments are welcome!

Hi Andy,
That is just a great moon shot.
Very sharp with excellent contrast and a nice dark background.
I presume it was the 400 f5.6 .
I know it's sharp because I agonised over this lens and the 300 f4 IS with the 1.4 TC. Went for the 300.
Just arrived today and the rain is p....ng down. Hope to test it out over the Easter weekend.
Love the shot, well done.

very impressive, I too am looking forward to taking better shots of the moon, if they only turn out half as good as yours, i'll be happy. Thanks for sharing.

I can't look at the moon too long without the hair on my face and body sprouting out! But I would like to be able to take a shot like that someday. I need to start looking for the right lens. Any suggestions?

Beautiful pic.
What were the focal length and exposure settings?
I have been trying to decide between the 100-400L or the 400 f/5.6.
Did you use a teleconvertor?
I have found that the 20d exposure meter cannot correctly shoot the moon!
It has to be done in manual with and extreme under-exposure (that is at 300mm where the moon covers only a small portion of the view finder.

Thank you for all the kind comments. I was using the 400mm f/5.6 on the 300D. Exposure was 1/320s at f/5.6 ISO 200. I used a tripod with a remote shutter release and the camera was on manual because the auto-exposure meter couldn't work it out!
The picture posted here is actually a 100% crop because the moon is so small on my 6mp camera. I'd like to see what can be achieved with something like a 1Ds MkII.
lomond: I'm sure you'll love your new kit, in fact if you check out http://www.canonextrapromotion.com (http://www.canonextrapromotion.com/) it looks like you can get a £135 rebate too! Please post some photos when you get a chance, Scotland has a wealth of great nature photo opportunities.
ronmayhew: I had to make the same lens choice as you. I decided that the vast majority of my subjects would require at least 400mm so it made sense to get the prime and cover the shorter range with another lens. The 400mm is an absolutely fantastic lens, a credit to Canon engineering.

I was kind of dissapointed -- oh, don't get me wrong, it's an absolutely beautiful shot, but I was hoping for a werewolf or something... oh well :)

That's a great capture! The image is huge and complete, and with excellent detail. (Did you know that the large crater on the bottom right at the center of the rays is about ~55 miles (90 km) wide, and has a mountain in its center? And the position looks like the moon was rising.)
I have a few beggarly shots on my website. The ones I took during the day weren't too tough - mainly point and shoot. At night I had to switch to spot metering before I got anything other than a blur. (F-stop and shutter speed were similar to yours.)

Amazing shot. It makes we want to try shooting the moon again. I haven't had that much luck up to now.
