I want a tripod that is not too costly, but sturdy. It will be used at work, so I don't want to use an expensive rig. I am a Deputy Sheriff and it will stay in my trunk. My equipment is a 40D with grip. I usually have a 24-70L on, but also have a 70-200 f/2.8 IS. I use a 430EX II also. So it has to be sturdy. I work nights and it has become apparent that I need something. We are issued P&S camera's, they are the worst at night.

This combination - the Manfrotto 055XProB topped off with their 488RC2 ball head (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/505863-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto__055XPROB_Tripod_Legs_Black_.html) - is the most-often recommended rig here, and for very good reason.

^^ that is the exact combination that I just ordered. Stupid ice storm delayed the delivery. Got it from Amazon for a little over $250

Like Skip and thaking have, I also have the Manfrotto 055XPROB and the 488RC2. Sturdy, very sturdy. Simple to set up.

A little heavy, but for trunk duty and light use, 055xprob will do just fine.
