I was wondering what setting is best. AV, TV, or manual on my 20D with the 100-400. A neighbor of mine says to use av to control the SS, but I've been using that and all my images look to soft and underexposed. Was thinking of using manual and a flash

One thing I started doing was setting my 30D to full-automatic and making note of the camera-selected settings when aiming at a bird. Now, my settings in manual are much closer and producing better results. I also try to get at least 1/320 on the shutter speed.

One thing I quickly found was that moving that exposure need to the right a click or two produces better results in the dismal weather we have here in NE Ohio. On the rare , and I mean VERY rare sunny day, I put the exposure meter back to zero.

Thanx very helpful. I'll have to try the full auto.

I don't see anything about this shot that some noise removal and USM couldn't cure.
