I recently picked up a copy of this lens and really like it so far. Here's a sample pic I shot with my D30 at 300mm ISO 200 and saved as a large/fine jpeg. It was not modified other than resizing it to upload.

Not bad, it's not so detailed as a macro lens, but for a zoom it's pretty good. There's a review here (http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007) too.

Thanks for the sample. I know it takes time and effort to make the post and I for one appreciate seeing examples.

I'm sorry to be the one saying this but the dandilion pic is VERY blury.
Did you mean it to be?

i didn't mean for the picture to be blurry OR sharp, i shot it and posted it straight out of the camera because people have been asking about this lens and i thought some actual photos would be appreciated, please also remember that this is a resized image from a 3.3mp jpeg (d30)
i'm going to a local park today so i'll post some more pictures later
and thanks for the comments =)
EDIT: incidentally, this picture is at 300mm with mode 2 IS enabled

Isn't that the lens that cost almost one thousand dollars.

The photo does not look terribly sharp.
BUT it is not possible to judge the sharpness of the lens accurately from an 810 x 540 pixel image posted on the web. We don't know if it is a 100% crop image and remember, it's made with a 3 megapixel D30, maybe you'd see a lot more detail if it was done with an 8 megapixel 20D. Also, we don't know if the image above was made on a tripod, with or without mirror lock-up, with or without IS, what the shutter speed was etc.
I also have th 70-300 DO. Although you can't accurately judge the sharpness of the lens in general with the image above, I can say that I'm not impressed by the sharpness of my 70-300 DO, especially at 300mm.

EDIT: incidentally, this picture is at 300mm with mode 2 IS enabledWhy IS mode 2? Mode 2 is for panning, to follow a moving subject. You should use Mode 1 for stationary subjects.

Agreed on the panning IS setting, should have been 1, or even off if on a tripod.
The D60 at 300 is not supersharp either, but does create a very usable picture.
This picture is untreated and resized, and that could account for some of the "blurry" view. But a close look would show good detail of the seed feathers.
USM and colour correction would produce a good picture.
Thanks for the post, nice to see this lens in use.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, this is a nice shot. DOF blur and the background colours do a nice job of making the white pods stand out. Interesting how the front pod feathers are more in focus than the ones on the edge.

oops, i should have mentioned that the dandelion was shot handheld...not sure about shutter speed (really fast!), and i should have used is1 you're right! i like the blur and the DOF on this shot but i agree that the sharpness is lacking
here's one from this afternoon at 300mm iso200, is1, handheld, straight out of the camera (large/fine 3.3mp jpeg)...this is the VULCAN statue in Birmingham, Alabama

Good technical picture. Front view would be nice to see, too.
Sharp enough, good colour, DOf covers everything.
Straight out of the camera and no PS work? This is a very usable picture (for a butt shot:-)

No Butts about it it's sharp.

well the reason its a butt shot is because of where the sun was...and because i...nevermind
this was a large/fine jpeg straight from the camera, not ps'd at all...although if somebody could explain usm to me i'd be much obliged...everybody makes it sound like the best thing since cmos so i'd like to learn how to do it
does anybody know if the 1.4x tc works with this lens? i took some paparazzi-style pics of the glamorous old people that live in my neighboorhood but a li'l more reach would be nice
