Really bad form, but hey, it was worth 5th place and a ribbon!

I really like the first 2 pics. What camera did you use?

Used my 20D with the 50mm lens. For the first two pics, the lighting was wonderful. Then the clouds rolled in.

But you also changed your light(sun) angle causing more backlighting. Did you use partial metering?

Yes, I changed my position because my daughter (shots 1 & 2) is right handed. The other vaulter is left handed. I'm very new to photography and did not set any special metering on the camera.

The camera was in manual mode and I kept checking the histogram after each shot and adjusted accordingly.

My daughter almost over the bar! 50mm

When I read that - at first I thought you meant the bar was on 50mm off the ground.

Was trying to figure why she needed a pole vault. LOL

I like 1 & 2.

I like 1 & 2.

The bar was 6' 6" (1.98 meters) in shot 1 & 2. 7' (2.13 meters) in #3.

My son vaults for UNC and he goes a bit higher. I think his personal best is 14' (4.27 meters). I don't have any really good shots of him. Seems the NCAA is not so willing to allow dads on the infield during a track meet :(

Sounds like the job for a nice telephoto.

nice job on the second photo, it's my favorite.

i hope your daughter continues to improve. last year i was the only girl pole vaulter in my high school league, and i know how hard it is, but once you start clearing the bar more and more consistently, you'll get your form better. hope she has a good coach though. i had to teach myself, so my P.R. is only 7'9. :( good luck!

Coaching seems to be a problem around here. Only a couple high schools have vaulting coaches. We end up taking our kids to Coach Hood's camp in Abilene, TX.

My daughter has not attended a camp yet. We're trying to get her to attend one of his sessions this summer. My son improved 18" after attending one of his camps.

Very nice shots.

I think #2 could've been perfect, only if you crouched a bit lower to remove the tree and the background.

I've had my 20d for 3 months and have yet to achieve the quaity you show in #1 and #2.

Any 20d vets out there willing to give a guy some pointers?

I believe I know the "basics", yet the quality still blows.

What stands out the most is you show no washed out hot spots anywhere. That is one thing I'm having alot of trouble with.

I know that was a very open-ended request but anything helps!

sample of what I'm talking about...
