I have been looking for a used Macro and have seen some Canon 100mm f2.8's with SSC in the description. I was just wondering what this means and is this a different lense than the 100mm f2.8? Thanks.

Super Spectrum Coating and was a designation on old FD lenses.

So, does that mean that the functionality would be different from the newer 100mm f2.8? Or, in other words, is this something I do or do not want to buy for my Rebel Xti?

No I'm sorry its just the coatings that were on the lenses.. Nothing to effect what you do, In fact I think some of the coatings have gotten more sophisticated since the old FD days. There were SC and SSC designations on those old FD lenses.

Also those old FD lenses were manual focus.

Also those old FD lenses were manual focus.

Not to mention, FD lenses don't fit on any EOS camera. They were designed for the old Canon system and went the way of the dinosaurs about 20 years ago.

You can get adapters to convert them to work on EOS bodies, but they aren't ideal and lack much of the functionality so the lenses are purely manual everything.

You are far better off sticking to those lenses designed for the EOS system (i.e. those with an EF or EF-S type mount).

Also consider that although your camera takes both EF and EF-S, if you ever move up to full-frame then the EF-S lenses won't be suitable.

Ok. That helps. Thanks.

I figured that would not be the one I wanted because the price was too low.
