View Full Version : N.Y.C. Auto Show Lens Choice? (tomorrow)

I'm going to the New York Auto Show Tomorrow. I've secured "Exhibitor Staff" tickets which entitles me to entry two and a half hours before the public.
I want to take pictures of the cars, obviously, but especially of the models who stand up on the often times spinning display stands.
I recently got the 24-70 F2.8 IS which seems perfect.
What else from my ever growing arsenal would you recommend? Here's what I have to choose from:
100mm F2.8 macro
17-40 Canon
75-300 DO IS
70-200 F2.8 IS.
Thanks for taking time to give me some recommendations.

17-40 and 24-70 should be great!

When you say "a pass" I assume you are asking how much a ticket is. I'm not quite sure as the ones I have I get free. I believe the cost is approx 15 per ticket but I may be wrong by a couple of dollars. It opens to the general public tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. and runs through the 5th, I believe. It is at the Jacob Javits Center on 34th Street and 11th Avenue, two short blocks from B&H.

Just tell her you're going to work.
Look for me. I'm the only 48 year old whose brown hair has turned blond.

The reason I ask is because I worked in trade shows for nearly ten years so I've got a lot of friends at the Javits. I'm sure I could work my way in there for free with the Local 3 guys or the Renaissance Exhibitors if I get there early enough. Yes, by "pass" I mean ticket... I'm just used to calling them passes because that's what they're called for people that are working at the show, my bad. I wouldn't mind paying for a "ticket" but maybe I'll see you there earlier if I can catch an early train with with one of the guys I know who is working the show. I'm sure I'll be wearing a Mets hat and be shooting with a Canon 300D... say hello if you'd like.

Don't you think you'd be much better off wearing a Yankee hat?;) My son won't let me talk to Met fans. (j/k)

I prefer to avoid rooting for teams that choke worse then any other in the history of the game. ;) $200+ million and they still couldn't buy 1 more win.... it's a shame really. My heart breaks for them :)

If your taking 17-40, you might need a flash....

17-40. Bring a flash and a tripod. The tripod really makes a difference. Use slow speeds as if you don't have a flash and the flash will highlight stuff.

2 words!
POLARIZING FILTER!!!
It is rediculous how badly some of these auto shows are lit (I go to the San Diego and LA auto shows yearly).
Save your sanity and a LOT of post production work and bring a circular polarizer (Hit B&H on the way if you have to) but it WILL make a HUGE difference with all those shiny waxed cars and crystal clear glass.

I don't know if I will bother to go to the car show this year...
I am really undecided.

I think others have addressed the car needs. I'd rather talk about models. :) Yea!
For this I would either bring the 100mm or better the 70-200. There's nothing worse than having a nice pretty model fill 1/8 to 1/10 of the frame when you could fill the whole thing with the right lens.
Seeing as you're shooting full frame, if you want one lens, I'd take the 70-200 just to be sure, if you want to travel "light."
Alternatively you could use this as an excuse to hop over to B&H and pick up a 135mm f/2L. I think that might well be the ultimate lens for this application. :)

it really depends on what you are going for... if this is just for pleasure, take the 17-40 and be prepared to shoot at 800, 1600 or possibly 3200 iso
if this is for a job, take a tripod, cable release and the 17-40 and set the camera to apreture priority, f/ 8 or f/11 and shoot.
i covered the philly auto show for modified magazine (large import tuning mag) and shot on a 17-35 f/2.8 using the method above... at times that wasn't even wide enough
if you have a rebel or 20d consider renting a 10-22 for the day.
shoot in RAW... its the only way to control the WB, it will b all over hte place.
be prepared to take a lot of the same shot twice as people walk thru them.

I appreciate all the replies. I won't get into the YANKEE MET DEBATE.
As far as people walking by, that's not a problem as we are in there at 8 am, three hours before the public. I chose to use my new 24-70 F2.8 Canon. It's truly a remarkable lens. I had the 70-300 DO but never took it out of the bag. Started with no flash, took it out, only to have very dark pictures; then compensated with 1-2 extra stops of flash with better results. Wound up putting the flash away.
There was two people there with medium format (couldn't tell if they had digital backs but I don't think so) on tripods with wheels and people following them around with ladders when they wanted to get above the cars.
All in all, a fun day, followed by dinner in Wo Hops on Mott Street in Chinatown.
Here's a sample pic from the day: http://upload.pbase.com/image/41231736

Mike-
We're you at the Philly show with all the masses (of people)? I ask since it would seem as if a tripod would get in the way with large crowds.

Car, schmar.
(I don't remember, actually.)
As far as a tripod goes, that's the one thing I haven't gotten. Yet.
I do have an old Bogen that I originally purchased when I used to shoot a lot of video. It has a fluid head. It's just too heavy to lug around. Also has some broken connectors between the middle and the legs.
Recently in B&H, I "bought" a nice Gitzo carbon fiber and an even nicer quick release head. The total for both was something like $800. With the other things I had picked out that day, the receipt I was carrying around was aroung $1400. (Anybody not familiar with the way B&H works in-store, you tell a salesman (I would say salesperson to be politically correct, but there are no females working in the store, except pouring soda and giving out pretzels, and cleaning the bathrooms, etc.) what you want, they order it up from the three-level basement, and a few minutes later up it comes on a conveyor belt in a large cardboard/wood box green in color. After you approve what is contained therein, the salesman scans it in, gives you a receipt, and it is placed on another conveyor belt where it rides along the ceiling all the way to the front of the store where it waits until you are done shopping. You then get on line to pay, after which you go to a pickup counter.
In between ordering it and paying for it, I had second thoughts and went to another salesman and had it removed.
So, the long and short is, still no tripod. I have a Gitzo monopod and don't want to settle for less than the best and lightest. That's why I want carbon fiber.

I had it in my bag but never used it. I liked the wide end of the 24, and the 70 seemed to be enough reach most of the time.
