Shot these in a studio. Learned a lot about lighting that I will improve on the next time I get a chance to do them.

Nice job Matt.
The second is by far my favorite. I don't particularly like the first one because the arms look blown out (even though they aren't). I think if you game him a little more color in the first it would a little better.

I like the processing on the 2nd Matt. Good job.

Third is my favorite because its less played out. However, I wouldnt have cropped the ball, I would have tried to set the player farther away from the center of the frame, and I would even out some lighting on his face.
Pretty good for a first time though!

thanks for the CC. I was trying for a harder type look to the images. It was a great learning experience for me and next time I shoot I without a doubt will produce better images and lighting. :)

Very nice Matt

Nice job on these Matt. I like #2 (of the first set) the most.

The original shot of #2 was the white background. But as for the mean mugging, I like it. I think sports is a serious thing and every once in a while it's ok to look mean :)
We got nice ones with him smiling as well for the mom

I like 'em Matt, the mean mugging has the feel that fits the lighting - though kinda sick of the Michael Jordan pose that everyone does. #3 is my pick of them.

Sauk, what do you call that lighting/color style in #2? I see it in ESPN The Magazine all the time and I was trying to describe it to a friend but I couldn't put it in words. It has kind of a metallic feel to it.

Type Dustin Snipes in google, he has a tutorial.
Very nice Matt, they look great.

I had a mix of lucas arts plug-in and some of dustin snipes process in that image. I combined the two.
Same goes for #3 on set 1 of the images. A little bit of lucas arts and snipes process in that one as well.
Thanks Chris.

Sorry Matt...I think the lighting is a little too hot! From the hot corner on his temple to the calvicle, left shoulder and the triangle on the ball. Was the ball shot direct, box or umbrella? Maybe a silver/gold reflector would have given enough light from the quarter back lighting. There seems to be some LA (Lucas Art) going on too...which I don't mind...gives the rough and tough look but almost a black eye.
The bottom line is - if the parents/player loves it - it doesn't matter what anyone says! With that, here's my version of yours!!

Matt, I think you did very well with these. Dustin Snipes has some great stuff and tutorials and it certainly looks like you figured some of it out. Well done bud.

Yeah I plan on investing in some ab800's and some strip boxes to get a better look for these type of shots.

I really like his SI Swimsuit stuff but to be honest I don't like his "sportrait" type shots. The processing and what not does nothing for me.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Got to say though that pretty much everyone else out there disagrees. Hes regarded as almost the best of the best. He always produces amazing stuff, he always produces unique stuff, and hes always at the forefront. You should go check out the book "Athlete" that he just put out.
He also just did another SI cover with LeBron

Yeah I am sure there are a ton of people out there that like his work, there is a reason he has been in the business so long right? lol I love his swimsuit stuff, just not a fan of his other portrait type work.
His processing is just not my style, don't like it
