Greetings from DownUnder,
I have a trusty Manfrotto 190 Alloy Tripod with a three way head for the past 15 years or so but want to upgrade to something more sturdy with the ability to do Pano shots. I have tried on the old 190 but it has no leveling and is a bit on the light side.
I've been looking at the Markins M20 Ballhead with the RRS PCL-1 panning clamp and Nodal Slide, but may use the RRS B55 Ballhead if it's a better choice. The system would be carrying a Canon 5D and various L Lenses up to 300 f2.8. Also on the list would be a L shaped camera bracket from RRS to support the camera in portrait mode for Pano shots. Not sure about what tripod legs, the old Manfrotto has seen me through some dirty situations, as i do some hiking the legs need to be able to take some hits, will carbon legs be good for situations where they might get knocked/dropped occasionly? Anything else i've forgotten, apart from a big pile of cash! Any help appreciated.

Gitzo series 3.

As for the knocking and dropping of a CF tripod: They can stand up to some abuse, but it is possible to destroy them ;)

I recently read an artical written by Jon Hicks in a British Photo Magazine called "Digital SLR Photography" and for Pano photography he highly rated the really right stuff Panoramic head.

Perhaps this is something to look into

Hope this helps.

I have the RRS single row pano set-up and love it, easy to use and well made. I use it on top of a X055PROB Manfrotto.

Nodal ninja stuff cannot be beat for the price. Pick your favorite tripod/ ballhead combo then order a Nodal Ninja 5 set-up for your 5D. www.nodalninja.com

Thanks for all of the replies. Ok then, decided on the Markins M20 ballhead and the RRS PCL-1 panning clamp MPR-CL II Nodal slide.
As for the Tripod..............argh..................argh.... ............ The Gitzo 3 series yes i want one, looks perfect expcept for the price. Not sure if it's the crappy Aussie dollar or Gitzo tripods have also been that price but around the $1400 price range. I'll order the other two parts first and give the brain & wallet sometime to think/expand!
How about the new Manfotto MagFibre range, probably the 055PRO 3 leg version?

Um, not bad legs per se, but certainly nothing compared to the 3 series Gitzo...
