I've just started playing around with HDR, and came across the freeware app, QTPFSGUI. It's quite interesting and seems to be plenty capable enough.

Kinda curious if anyone else here has used it, and if so, what you might think of it. I've found the "Fattal" tonemapping operators to be most useful for dramatic effect.

It is a nice app, especially to explore some of the lesser known tone mapping operators without having to try them via a command line interface.

Here is an example using the Mantiuk operator:

One of the tools in my toolbox for sure. I wouldn't mind 16 bit output.

Thanks for the link, Kirk. That's a very well done HDR. I did a search on qtpfsgui before starting this thread, but came up empty. I must have fumble-fingered when I did the search.

So far, I've tried creating an HDR using only three images, I EV apart from each other. After reading through the threads here a bit more, it appears that up to 9 images gives the best results. Oh well, live and learn.

Best,

Michael

It all depends on the dynamic range you need to capture. There is no "set" number of exposures that every HDR needs. Try taking some test shots to get a sense of the extrema on each end of your exposure range and then plan your sequence. In that link I posted, there is a link to my smugmug page with the JPEGs I shot to make that HDR. Go ahead and use them to experiment with qtpfsgui if you would like.

Have fun and experiment!

Thanks, I'm d/l-ing your photos, and I'll play around with them, see if I can get close to what you did.

As for my 3-image HDR, it definitely would have benefited from more exposures, especially on the +EV side.

Best,

Michael
