Great subject and the tones on his faces are perfect. However, IMHO, the blown out snow behind him is a bit distracting.
As a suggestion, maybe blend in one of the darker exposures in PS (or your editor of choice) to bring up some features to the snow...

Thanks for the suggestions,i see what you mean about the snow in the backgroung.I sort of got caught up in the main part of the pic so didn't really notice,i haven't really been doing all this post processing thing for very long so it's just a learning curve at the moment. Thanks for the comments.

The foreground of the picture, I feel is really great. I like the feeling of movement that you get from the elongated snow flakes, and the child's look is excellent (you should have been running from the snowball and not taking his picture!!!) :)
But I will add, that it isn't just the snow in the background, but along the transition zone of snow and foreground that you got a lot artifacts - the worst of which for me is at the top of his hood/snow background transition.
So, did you end up eating the snowy gloves he had.....or did you have a larger snow threat behind your back?! :p

Personally I don't mind the blown out snow. It's how we see in a snow scene. The subject is rendered better than we can usually see against a blinding reflection. So hdr has done its job. As a picture it puts the emphasis on the subject. A really outstanding portrait.

I dig the shot a lot actually. The snow in the background isn't too distracting.

Agree. I didnt notice the snow behind him till someone mentioned it.
I wasn't focusing on the background, was focusing on the subject.
