It keeps searching for a target but can't pick up the lightest of objects...
It is with both lenses - the kit lens and the 50 1.8. Now it is on low battery so I am hoping that is all but I really doubt it is cause I have never had this problem at all...
Any ideas?

The autofocus system needs some contrast to let it focus, if you try and focus on a white wall or anything without contrast it will just keep seeking. Have a read of your manual in the autofocus section.

yes I have read the manual and have taken over 2000 shots with it. I have been focusing on the eyes of my students for over a month and now I am now getting nothing as it searches. On the rare occasion it finally focuses but certainly not like it did 9 hours ago...

Did you get the 4 page PM that I sent you. Finding a dealer will not be hard for you if you take the time to read it.
Taking pictures in a classroom without lighting equipment will be very difficult for you, however I cannot imagine why the 300D wont focus. That sounds pretty bad to me.

Is there enough light? If it's very dark... cameras have difficult focussing...

First of all, fix the low battery situation.
Second, make sure that your lens is set for AF-Autofocus, not MF-Manual Focus. In fact, flip that switch back and forth a time or two. Detach the lens, and then re-attach it, and make sure that the lens clicks to a full lock when you twist it.
For a focus target, use anything that has contrast and is well lit.
Put your camera into the fully automatic (Green Box) mode, just to simplify things.

Everyone...,
Thanks for all your help...I am not quite sure why it wouldn't focus for two hours but it seems to be back to its old trusty self again...sent me for a little scare though I have to say...
Just so you know it was dark when I first tried it but immediately after I went into some serious light and put one of my co workers there...it couldn't even focus on her, couldn't pick her up against a white background...the AF point is always locked in the center, so its not like it was trying to pick up two or three things... anyway seems to be back...here is to hoping cause I only have 12 weeks left here in Korea, and then another two in china and I would really hate to be Camera less for any of this time...
I think I will have it looked at when I get home...here's to hoping it lasts till then...
Thanks again...Thisn is a really helpful forum...

Hopefully it is not the problem I just went through last week where I lost my autofocus on my Digital Rebel. Now its gone 4-6 weeks (One 1/2 weeks into it already). Check the main mirror, and tell us if the mirror behind it is hanging down or if it is secure to the main mirror.

I had read your post after my brief panic - Sorry to hear about your loss - and it doesn't seem to be hanging down...I know very little about the inside of the camera's but it doesn't seem to be hanging in anyway...
