View Full Version : Larger filter and step up ring to avoid wide angle vignetting?

Hi everyone,
I've been considering buying a new circular polarising filter principally for use with three lenses:
Sigma 10-20mm, Canon 17-40mm and Canon 70-200mm. All of these lenses have a 77mm thread and so the choice would appear to be easy, get a 77mm filter.
However 10-11mm on the Sigma ultrawide actually puts my current filter holder into the frame (Cokin filter system). So I started wondering, would buying an 82 or 86mm filter and using a step up ring avoid this problem. I understand that standard sized screw in filters can also show up at ultra wide angles. <aybe the step up ring would be visible, but I'm thinking as they have to angle outwards, maybe they are wider than the 10mm field ov view.
Having an 86mm filter would also be of some occasional use as I use a Sigma 50-500mm for motorsport photography and this has an 86mm thread. Currently I have no polarising option for this lens as Cokin P stops at 82mm. It would be an occasional use item as with it being an f6.3 lens at 500mm, the opportunities to darken further with a CP and yet retain useful shutter speeds would be restricted to only the brightest of days.
The CP filter I'm thinking about is rather expensive and I'd appreciate your comments and experience before deciding on which filter to pursue.
thanks
John.

I would have thought that adding a ring (and extra distance) would maybe exacerbate the problem. I use a pretty thick 77mm polariser on my 10-20 with no vignetting problems.

John, like you I am using a step-up ring with a filter. Now here is the dilemma, if you have a hood, and your ring gets stuck the hood isn't coming off easily. At least if you use the correct size you can get your hood off!

Even though the step-up rings "angle outwards", I don't think this will solve the problem because ultimately, there is a part of that ring that will be 77mm. I think your best solution is to purchase one of the filters that have ultra-thin rings/mounts intended for use with WA lenses. That's about the best you can do.

Thanks a lot for the information everyone, it looks like the best bet is to get a slim 77mm.
$425 is a bit steeper that I want to pay, especially given the USD to GBP exchange rate at the moment. I was planning on getting a Kasemann (probably misspelt that) slim filter which is around £160.

Cheers Morpheus, but I think I'm going to stay ordering from within the UK at present. By the time I added on the shipping and taxation the price would be the same if not higher.
Thanks for taking the time though.
John.

Especially considering you might want to add a UV filter to protect it.
