I'm a new camera to this forum and I am hoping that you can help.

My new SLR USER is not delivering the results that I expect from myself. While I am far more capable than any of my predecoessors and especially more capable than my little brother the point and shoot, my new SLR USER is not delivering what I expected from myself.

My pictures are blurred and disappointing.

My controls are under-utilized, and my instruction manual is laying the in the box with a fresh untouched binding.

Are there any other cameras out there that have had the same experience. I really need help.

Sincerely,
Rebel XT

Dear Rebel.

I know what it's like to be over-valued and under-utilized.

Here's a tip for you. Instead of giving your owner fuzzy pictures, show him 'Error-99.' That really will get his attention, and might just inspire him to get the manual out of the box and read it. On the other hand, be aware that you run the risk of being sent to the camera hospital, and that's never fun.

Good luck.

Dear Rebel,

You think you have it bad, my owner paid extra to adopt me after getting tired of my Brother 10D and he keeps trying to turn the dial to the green square, I don't have a green square; actually I don't even have a dial, but that doesn't stop him from trying to turn the buttons. You should see him with those fat fingers of his trying to turn the small round buttons...

Oh and he keeps complaining about no onboard flash, like I am crippled or something. I keep telling him I look a lot better with the 550EX, but does he listen...

Not to mention complaigning about my weight, after all I not overly fat, just have a sturdy support structure, well built, you know...

But at least I know he looked at the manual, he had to, just to figure out how to get the battery in.

So you got it good.

Your bigger Brother,

Dear XT,

Alas, there is probably no hope. If you user didn't open the manual within the first 8 hours, it will likely never be opened and you will never be properly utilized.

Speaks from experience. My dial is still on AUTO after many months.

I'll go more than that.

You need to browse through the manual the first time, just to see what kind of material is in each chapter. You might decide that you can skip a chapter if it does not apply. Then you read the manual, page by page. You don't have to memorize it.

Then you go shoot some photos using a variety of modes that you just read.

Then you go back and re-read the manual again. Lots of it will make better since as compared to prior to using the camera.

Then, after about one week, you go re-read it yet again.

I'm not kidding. It helps.

STOP, DON[T DO IT!!!

Neil is a known, registered, camera offender. Get yourself to a safe-house immediately. Hang on and I'll get you my address.

The real answer is. . . take more pictures, read more directions.

 Your user needs to be manual trained

 Take your manual and smack him on the nose (or the fingers that reach for the dial to set to auto) and say R.T.F.M. (Read The F Manual, this is a common term of help desk and technicians worldwide)

Actually make this more fun for your user. Read Robert W Gross's post to him, and follow the instructions. You will need to read it to them, though. They appear to have a problem with the written word. Once they start seeing the results they have created wtih you, life will get better.

While they're at this, you should introduce them to "L" and "DO" to provide you with a proper support group.

Good luck and enjoy your new user. A little training and they will develop the skills necessary to put you to full use.

You may consider sending them to a photography class at the local community college or high school.

It's obvious you have to convince your USER that you need an equipment upgrade! Some new L glass will give a much better outlook on life.

My pictures are blurred and disappointing.

can you also remind your SLR USER that you can't have shutter speeds slower than 1/60s without being on a tripod or something sturdy. And if he doesn't have one, he can lean on a wall or rest your chin (lens) on something?

My Drebel (your cousin on your father's side) told me that when I first adopted him.

Good luck!

My NEW USER tried L glass. The accidentally good picture got better but the problems still remain. I feel like a cheap whore with too much makeup on.

Maybe he will keep coming here to get good advice. That is my only hope.
